Pauric Duffys round robin proposals

Good reply Hardtimes.

Like I said, I was very happy with the proposals OVERALL. The Super 8 is worth a look at but the other elements are more important.

You say the country's best teams are a stretch. Surely the teams that make the quarter finals each year should be deemed the best considering everyone gets a second chance? I didn't say they're all challenging but every county has to be ranked somewhere.

I understand your point about the bigger teams not being caught out but this is one of the strange arguments about the GAA. People seem to think we should be handicapping the good teams because they're good. Fair enough, in a straight knockout competition you can catch a team on the hop, but outside of that, in other sporting competitions, isn't the aim of a tournament to find out who the best team is? Why should we be trying to help the smaller teams beat the big ones? Again, this brings us back to having a tiered championship, but then again this discussion just seems to go around in circles due the number of options and opinions.

Again, a bit dramatic with the soul selling remark. What is it we're compromising? We've long since lost the straight-knockout. The unmovable that is the provincial championships are still there. The one thing that really, really bothers me, often on this forum, is the term "fat cats in Croke Park". We can debate how far the GAA should go for financial reward but surely it's clear that the money gained is put back into the association in some way or form? Of course we can debate how and where that should be spent also.

Anyway, I'm happy to wait and see. I think it will fail due to the fact that so many are looking for it to fail. Once a dead rubber games comes up we'll have mass outrage declared.

The one thing all of this should do is give all interested parties three full years to get the next alteration correctly. Time for the GPA and CPA to get their house in order.

Name 1 competition in sport where the quarter finals are played on a league basis?
Just 1.

I don't know of any. Is this supposed to prove a point, other than it suits whatever argument it is you're making?

It's not to prove any point .. the good that was done by condensing the provincials and having no replays has been undone by adding 8 more games . Some of those being dead rubber games.. counties who lose their first 2 games obliged to maybe travel the length of the country to fulfil a meaningless 3rd fixture..
now that's exciting championship stuff isn't it????

We know, we know. Dead rubbers are possible, not definite. Are you near finished flogging that dead horse?

Skellig - I understand your point about the bigger teams not being caught out but this is one of the strange arguments about the GAA. People seem to think we should be handicapping the good teams because they're good.

My point is that it's not the better teams who will have an advantage but the Counties with the better resources and an easier draw - it will probably hamper Ulster teams. Ulster teams usually go through tougher games to get to a QF - when you then add in 2 more games each at QF stage the injuries and tiredness start to catch up compared to other provinces who may have played less games and at a less intensive pace.

BTW - Brian McAvoy would row in behind clubs and counties if they wanted to change the Championship format - http://hoganstand.com/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=268643

Skelling.
We'll have to agree to disagree on a few things. Just a quick response. IMO teams from rank 5 to 12 (maybe even further out) have very little between them and any given year anyone could get into the Super 8. But 1-5 will always be there so Super 8 plays into their hands both for improving their play and revenue. It's not about helping the smaller teams knockout the big ones. But if they do catch them with a lucky blow then fair play to them and good luck. Fermanagh 04, Down 10, Tipp last year- I don't think we'll see too many AI semis appearances for lower ranked teams in the future. I'm not interested in finding out who the best team is, I already know this. I want to see Championship football and all the shocks and drama.
Again I don't think I'm being dramatic with the soul selling remark. We will always need money, we will always get it, spend it and need more. When we squeeze peoples pockets with this new venture the extra money will be great for a while till it's mismanaged and doesn't balance the books anymore. In 5, 10 years time when we need more money where will the next squeeze be focused. What exactly is acceptable in the pursuit of money. If money was an issue then maybe they could have looked at some of the spending side.

opa01 and Hardtimes, all valid points and it's a matter of wait and see I suppose.

Strange feeling, having a civilised debate on Hoganstand.

Wait til the Super 8 actually comes in and the GAA come with idea of seeding the top teams so they're guaranteed semi-final qualification. HQ have prove over and over again that they do not care about the smaller Counties or club football, they are only interested in the bigger Counties and filling Croke Park in the summer time.

Skelling you don't seem to have any input in any other topic...

And............we're back to normal. They're going to seed the top teams when the Super 8 actually comes about? Of course they are.

Is that a question?

I had a look at the U-21 thread and most people seem to have my view covered; Donegal seem to be an exceptional team.

I considered replying to your multiple points about the number of players not coming through but I just didn't have the stomach for it.

Don't worry. If I feel the need to comment on anything I know I have your blessing, if that's what you were trying to do.
