Attended the McRory play off game yesterday between St Pats Cavan v South West Donegal and was disappointed with the overall performance. The amount of times we got turned over throughout the game was astonishing . Our Midfield got overrun from the start and neither looked like natural midfielders. Donegal broke at pace and our lads couldn't track them. We needed to start the 2nd half well but it was Donegal who banged over 3 points to put them 9 points up and the Cavan defence was at sea.St Pats made a few changes and it seemed to help as we got it back to 3 and it begged the question should they have been started but In the end Donegal prevailed as they were still full of running and ran out deserving winners. Overall the style of football Donegal played was brilliant on the eye whereas we were slow and ponderous and running in to cul de sacs. The way the game has gone it looks like we need to play 15 attacking fast paced players and that includes the goalkeeper . The day of the Big strong defender is gone. Its all about legs. Pick lads who aren't afraid to work and get up and down the field..This has to start at the u 14 development teams . In Cavan here we just seem to put the Bigger lads on these panels which is a big mistake . You need to develop the smaller technical players as they do in Tyrone Derry and Donegal .Hopefully our development manager and helpers seen this in our own back yard yesterday Allrevvedup (Cavan) - Posts: 40 - 13/12/2024 09:46:46 2583410 Link 0 |
They've done exactly that with the U-14 development squad. Majority big players. This direction is coming from the top. Some things never change.

And people wonder why nobody bothers going to see county football at any level….? Coaches as I've said a thousand times have the game destroyed and no amount of rule changes are going to remedy that…!

Development squads in Cavan should be scrapped. There a waste of time and money. Parents out a fortune running in and out to Breffni Park with their kids. These sessions are just routine training . Nothing to do with helping them develop their skill levels..Its just a Tick the box exercise for the county board. We're a world away from the coaching that's happening up north. It's all well and good getting Breffni park developed but the young players developement should be a priority. We're playing catchup. Hopefully this Chairman will be more football than financial. The GAA has turned into all financial…. Just look at what's most important to those in Croke Park… Remember a fish rots from the head….!!!!

My impression was always the opposite - that Cavan supporters go crazy for small fast players, especially corner forwards who take on their man. Whereas big tall players are usually regarded as "lazy". 97Cavans (Cavan) - Posts: 384 - 17/12/2024 09:51:34 2583822 Link 1 |
