Hi There,
Just to say well done to the team, squad and coaches on a successful tournament. They couldn't have put in any more effort !
On Tuesday last week, in the semi final against a highly fancied Abbey CBS team, a 0:1 to 1:6 halftime deficit was overturned to a 2:6 to 1:6 win in the worst conditions possible. It was a monumental effort ! They played out of their skins ! Indeed, the pitch could have been deemed "unplayeable". The reward was a final with only 3 days "rest" or "preparation" for the biggest game of the year if not their life against St Colman's who were blitzing most teams ! There is no way they could reproduce that performance level again within 3 or 4 days ! It is a well proven physical and mental impossibility !
It could be said this game was over before it even started ! Someone pulled a fast one ! It is a well proven fact that a 7 day turnaround is required. How are all these young lads supposed to come down from such a high and get their feet on the ground in such a short space of time. You hear people say - "Ah, they're young, they'll be well able !". That is total bull ! Senior players are "Young" but they would not be asked to do this.
This team did not get the respect they deserved !
There's got to be a byelaw in the rule book where a minimum interval is allowed for preparations for a final, otherwise, they could have scheduled it the very next day ! A week at least ! What was the rush ? Is it because St Pat's were holders. This game could have been played on tomorrow Tuesday or midweek the same as all other games or even next Saturday !
Every year, at some point, there is talk about player welfare. The guys that are scheduling these games really do not have a clue. Before half time, you could see that some of the lads were struggling physically with the conditions and maybe carrying afew knocks from the semi !
Every other round was properly scheduled with at least a week or 2 between games. It is really is disgraceful !
The 3:10 to 0:9 final score is not a true reflection on this squad.
Who is going to speak up for these young lads !
I really think that something needs to avoid this situation. My guess is that there is already something in place but it wasn't activated.

But please dont single out this competition as being to blame for young player welfare. Schools and County Boards up and and down the Country are as equally to blame. Training with schools has nearly reached inter-county level, where young lads are pressurised to attend early morning training sessions before school, they re expected to do the gym work also, not to mention play matches at weekends, why cant these matches be played during school time? We've now got the case where underage club matches cant be scheduled at weekends because of schools fixtures. Clubs cant get their players out training because of schools and demand that individual schools are putting on players to miss club training and matches. So yes, I totally agree that young player welfare is an issue, but some schools are as equally to blame for it as the organisers of these competitions. We had an issue last year where a certain school in Munster had their u18 team train 28 days on the trot in December.
No wonder young lads are walking away from the game when they hit adult age.

It must have something to do with time and travel that these games are at weekends. It would be most of the school day gone travelling to North Tyrone or Derry
The Ulster schools competitions are usually organised well, strange that the final was a few days after Semi.

While I do agree that the lads should have got at least 10 days between games ,I hope this post isn't a case of sour grapes , because these lads don't deserve that, one could point out that St Pats had a month to prepare for their semi while Abbey had only a week to prepare after their thrilling quarter final win after extra time . It could also be pointed out that last year St Pats played an epic semi final on a Monday and won their final the following Saturday. I do agree that this group of young lads deserve better, but better from within.

On the player welfare note, while we're talking about St Pats, I'd like to wish the young McRory player who sustained a serious injury in Friday's game a full & speedy recovery.
