I remember both games. We should have won the first and just didn't show up for the second, but I don't remember it being a scrappy affair. StirringIt (Cavan) - Posts: 374 - 13/09/2018 11:21:31 2141370 Link 0 |
His claim was that it was in the first half of the drawn game. And that it was stamped out by the teammates he told of it at HT and it didn't happen much or at all in the 2nd game. PatTheDandy (Cavan) - Posts: 356 - 13/09/2018 11:26:34 2141372 Link 0 |
This was widely discussed on here at the time. It was the drawn game. Breffni40 (Cavan) - Posts: 12200 - 13/09/2018 11:53:08 2141379 Link 1 |
He was more than likely man of the match in both games if Nicholas Walsh was marking him... Sean.66 (Cavan) - Posts: 293 - 13/09/2018 13:33:12 2141416 Link 0 |
I remember it for sure sad really but chatting this morning with a Monaghan chap and he said really Tyrone have a lot to answer for. He went on to tell me several stories jesus it would make your hair stand. As for spitting I saw it happen just once and this was not the Tyrone match. I've seen first hand Peter Canavan doing worse than what Sean describes in his book. Against Cavan too. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5194 - 13/09/2018 13:45:48 2141422 Link 0 |
I don't condone it either no matter who it is, its absolutely disgusting and if someone done it to me i'd like to think id leave him sucking through a straw for a while. but i do think some of this is sensationalism. the above about the Tyrone minor team sledging a young lad who's dad had just died is pure disgusting and to think no responsibility was taken either. what about a certain Tyrone player asking a Meath player in 1996 how his mother was after she had passed away previous to the game!! theweanling (Cavan) - Posts: 414 - 13/09/2018 15:14:21 2141478 Link 0 |
Anyone who was at that game will recognise that Cavanagh is telling the truth in terms of getting rough treatment. If all the details are right I dont know. Walsh was marking him at midfield and Walsh never showed an interest in the ball the whole match. In the replay Walsh got booked early and that was the end of that. fredflint (Cavan) - Posts: 1485 - 13/09/2018 17:14:11 2141507 Link 0 |
It was brought up immediately after the game (possibly by Mickey Harte) and was discussed here at length as well as other media outlets. There's no question he was telling the truth and there's no secret as to who was the culprit. Now Tyrone were probably the lowest of the low when it came to the dark arts, sledging, diving and cheating. So he's not getting sympathy from me but we can still acknowledge it was wrong and the Cavan camp should publicly condemn such behaviour.
