Belturbet Carnival Weekend

The 4th Belturbet Carnival took place in Rory O'Moore Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday last. The weekend kicked off with the Traditional Tea Party followed by a magnificent Stars in their Eyes competition which was won by Peter Lennon & Gang as the Jackson Five. We applaud the entire  contestants for their wonderful performance which had the guests on Friday night in stitches. Brass Roots provided wonderful musical entertainment into the wee small hours of the morning. Saturday saw a 5Km Fun Run which was hosted by the Belturbet Ladies.  The Shuck Dodgers and John O'Grady provided the Saturday night entertainment into the wee small hours. Sunday afternoon saw a magic show take place in the Carnival tent with The Minion and Peppa Pig in attendance. There was also an U10 tournament with Mullahoran and Ballyhaise contesting the final which Mullahoran won After Extra time. Sunday afternoon saw a team of Belturbet veterans take on a team of Drumlane veterans on our training field in Rory O'Moore Park. The Belturbet squad was Benny Corby, Mark Lawlor, Barry Lawlor, Paul Murphy, Stuart Murphy, JJ Murphy, Paul O'Reilly, Don McDonald, Ciaran McCaffrey, Gordon "Rocky" Hands, Francie Cahill, Liam McCabe, Ollie Donohoe, Ian Gorby. After a very close first half in which the sides were level at the half time break Belturbet closed out the win with a flurry of second half points from Francie Cahill and Don McDonald in what was a entertaining spectacle. Also on display in the club gym was an historical exhibition with census records from the early 1900's of Belturbet townlands as well as pictures and memorabilia spanning several decades. Sunday night saw the Townlands Quiz take place in the Marquee with 68 teams competing with 8 rounds of 10 questions with Gareth McDonald's team emerging victorious in the finish after winning a sudden death instalment. The excellent Rhythm and Sticks were on stage before 12pm and played a fantastic set until the wee small hours to wrap up another excellent three day carnival. A huge word of appreciation and thanks goes to the Carnival committee of Denis Fitzgerald, Fr Jason Murphy, Jane Lawlor, Mark Lawlor, JJ Murphy, Liam McCabe, Martin Grogan, Michael Mahon and others whose meticulous months of preparation ensured  the weekend was a huge success. Thanks also to members of the club committee who helped out over the weekend. The club would also like to thank all the senior ladies and men's footballers who helped out in the Marquee Bar over the weekend. Great work folks! To all the ladies who hosted tables on Friday night and laid on such a wonderful spread we thank you for all your fantastic work in helping to make it a great night. Thanks to the businesses who generously sponsored spot prizes over the course of the weekend. Thanks to all the stewards over the three days who kept the traffic flowing well and to all the businesses who supplied tables and chairs to us. As pecial word of thanks to all the teams who attended the U10 tournament and Thomas Doonan for refereeing the event for us. Thanks to the Belturbet and Drumlane veterans who reunited for the match on the field and to Mick Drumm who was the man in the middle. A special word of appreciation to everyone who helped out in the days leading up to the Carnival in helping to get everything sorted out in terms of constructing the Marquee bar, collecting tables, chairs and sorting out the lighting and electrical work. A huge word of appreciation to all who helped with the clean up on Monday last in the football field and ensured that all the various borrowed items were returned promptly. The club would like to thank everyone who helped out in any way over the three days and would like to thank all the people who came out in such large numbers to support our Carnival event, we hope everyone had a fantastic time over the course of the weekend.

A big thank you to all the Table Captains who managed to pull a team together for the Battle of the Townlands Quiz in the Carnival Marquee on Sunday night last. All proceeds are going towards the future development of our Rory O'Moore Park grounds and investing in the future of the club. Congratulations to the McDonalds from Drumalee who were the Victors on the night.

Many thanks to all who have paid their Membership and to those who are on Direct Debit, it is badly needed and much appreciated as it is going directly into the account for the much needed re-development of our club grounds which we will be starting in 2017.
