In 1999, Mark McKeever won his first Cavan SFC title for Gowna as a 15-year-old.

The now former Cavan attacker-cum-defender also picked up county senior championship medals in 2000 and 2002 before making his Cavan debut the following year under then manager Mattie Kerrigan. McKeever enjoyed little or no success during his 13-year Cavan senior career which coincided with a dry-spell without championship silverware for Gowna.

It was 14 years before the Longford border men reached another Cavan SFC final, losing to Ramor United after a replay last November. But McKeever's immense perseverance and commitment to the cause was finally rewarded yesterday when Gowna went one better and lifted the Oliver Plunkett Cup for the first time in two decades.

Most footballers who made their inter-county debut in 2003 have hung up their boots for good, but not McKeever. Not only is the 38-year-old still playing at the highest level in club football but he is doing so on the biggest stage at Breffni Park.

McKeever underlined how much he still has to offer with his performance at centre-back in Gowna's long-awaited Cavan SFC success over Killygarry.
