A goal each half from Patrick Lynch proved the difference for Cavan as they saw off a stern challenge from Tipperary in the Allianz Football League Division 4 final at Croke Park this afternoon.

Mickey Graham’s side prevailed with a 2-10 to 0-15 victory in the end, with Lynch’s second goal in the 62nd minute key after Tipp had turned a one-point half-time deficit into a two-point lead midway through the second-half.

The sides had been level on 0-3 apiece a quarter of an hour into this decider when Lynch backed up a point with a coolly taken goal in the 24th minute.

Tipp responded well with points via Mark Russell (3) and Jack Kennedy (free) before a Raymond Galligan free sent Cavan back in front on the eve of the interval (1-5 to 0-7).

Three Conor Sweeney points helped keep the Premier men even with their Ulster counterparts after the turnaround and Russell would have them ahead with 20 minutes to go.

Cavan responded with an unanswered 1-2, including a break away goal that saw Thomas Galligan thread Lynch through and the Crosserlough man finish low between goalkeeper and defender.

Two Sweeney frees kept the heat on the Breffni men and Tipp would come agonisingly close to snatching back the lead when Stephen Quirke blasted off the bottom of the bar in injury-time, but the Blues were able to see out the victory by the narrowest of margins.
