UCC and SETU Carlow kept their Sigerson Cup hopes alive with victories over ATU Galway and MTU Kerry respectively in Round 2B yesterday.
Substitute Seán O’Connor's 54th minute goal, coupled with half a dozen points from Dylan Geaney, helped UCC to a 1-12 to 0-8 win over last year's Trench Cup champions ATU Galway at Tuam Stadium. O'Connor's goal came after Jack Livingstone had saved Cathail O'Mahony's initial shot.
UCC built up an early 0-6 to 0-2 lead before points from Dylan Ruane and Conor Raftery reduced the deficit to the minimum at half-time. But Billy Morgan's men managed to keep their noses in front until O'Connor's major settled it.
An early brace of goals from Eoin Hackett laid the foundations for SETU Carlow's 2-9 to 0-12 defeat of MTU Kerry.
The Louth man netted in the sixth and 12th minutes to send Billy O'Loughlin's charges into the break with a 2-4 to 0-5 lead. Offaly's Cian Farrell also kicked three points as MTU Kerry were relegated to the Trench Cup for 2024.
