Leinster MFC: Carlow, Louth and Kildare all win, Laois advance on penalties

June 26, 2021

Carlow minors held on for victory against Wicklow earlier today

There were wins for Carlow, Louth and Kildare this afternoon as the 2021 Leinster minor football championship got under way

Carlow’s well-time goals were enough for a 3-14 to 2-15 victory over Wicklow at Netwatch Cullen Park, where the hosts lead by nine at the break.

Wicklow battled back brilliantly and had the margin down to two in injury-time but the clock expired on them.

In Mullingar, Louth made their goals count in a 3-10 to 0-10 triumph over Westmeath.

Liam Flynn and Kieran McArdle netted the first-half goals that helped the visitors into a 2-5 to 0-5 lead, before Flynn struck with a minute to go to ensure the Wee County’s passage to the last eight.

Kildare were comfortable in a 4-10 to 1-12 win against Longford in Newbridge, bagging goals in each half to ensure they advanced.

The visitors saw an early lead wiped out by Gavin Thompson’s well taken goal prior to Elliot Beirne rattling the Midlanders’ net as the score board real 2-5 to 1-4 at the half.

Longford had the deficit down to two prior to James Harris and Niall Dolan raising more green flags to round off the win for the Lilywhites.

The later throw-in saw Laois and Wexford battling it out at O'Moore Park, where it took penalties to decide the contest after the teams couldn't be seperated in extra time.

Wexford had led by 0-6 to 0-3 at the end of the first-half of normal time prior to their opponents battling back to lead by 0-9 to 0-8 in injury-time.

Kyle Rankin’s free forced extra time for the Slaneysiders and although they’d ship a goal to the hosts another late Wexford point from Darby Purcell had the scoreboard reading 1-11 to 0-14 at the end of extra time.

Laois held their nerve to convert four of their five penalties to advance at the young Model men’s expense.

Kildare 4-10 Longford 1-12
