Slane 2-13 Simonstown 0-9
Slane entered their fifth consecutive championship quarter final with renewed optimism after somewhat of an up and down year. The second team of the senior champions was sure to be a tough task for the men in blue but they really showed that they will have a big say in where this year’s title will go.
The game started end to end but nobody in attendance could argue with the fact that from the tenth minute on, Slane totally bossed this game and should have perhaps won by more. Eoin Gibbs was marshalling the defence superbly from the full back position as Slane turned over several attacks to convert them to scores of their own. Slane won the majority of kickouts through Ally Harding, Jim Marry and Eanna Mooney who set up attack after attack that were brilliantly converted by Cillian Gough and Matt Tully. Harding was also supporting the play with great runs from the midfield and tagged on a few points for himself.
At half time Slane lead by 7 points to 2.
The second half was a higher scoring affair but more of the same from Slane meant Simonstown could never get within striking distance. Peter Martin was in excellent form throughout but he gave a masterclass in fielding during the second half, even managing a superb one handed catch. Simonstown did have a short scoring burst but Slane responded with the first green flag of the match from Tully to kill of any hopes of a comeback. Slane continued to drive on and the introduction of the returning Podge McGowan is not something any team would want to see coming off the bench. It didn’t take McGowan long to show what he can do as he managed to bag himself 1-2 in a 15 minute period. In the last 5 minutes Slane emptied the bench but this did not disrupt proceeding as further scores followed.
Slane management will be delighted with this performance and result, but they know bigger tests are to follow if they are to finally make the jump up the grades.

Simonstown Report
Simonstown Gaels 0-9 (9) Slane GFC 2-13 (19)
Simonstown Gaels second team travellled up to Drumconrath for the quarter final of the Junior B championship. Simonstown struggled in the match and Slane controlled proceedings from the first whistle. The Gaels had numerous wides in the first half and only registered 2 points from Kyle McEvoy and James Heaney. Slane bossed possession and could have been further ahead at half time but for a spectacular save from Gary Lynch with his feet. Score at half time was Simonstown 0-2 Slane 0-7.
Slane continued their clinical finishing and quickly extended their lead to 7 points. Simonstown's shooting in front of goal did improve in the second half with Shane McEnery scoring an excellent point at the beginning of the half. Any hope of a Simonstown comeback was evaporated when Slane got their first goal of the match. A superb ball was played into the the full forward line and the Slane forward finished low and hard past Gary Lynch. James Heaney tallied up 4 points in the last 15 minutes but unfortunately the Gaels were too far behind. Slane's second goal ensured that their victory was going to be a 2 digit margin.
