Rian O'Neill struck a 50-yard free over the bar with the last kick of the game that brought Armagh level at 2-14 to 1-17, and ensured extra-time would be played in the first of today's two All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals at Croke Park.
Kieran McGeeney's side were six points behind, as well as a man down following Greg McCabe's straight red for a high challenge on Matthew Tierney, heading into eight minutes of stoppage-time. However, they got right back into it when a lofted ball into Galway's goalmouth was punched into the path of Aidan Nugent who made no mistake.
Damien Comer responded with a point for Galway, and it looked as though they might see it out. But substitute Conor Turbitt rattled the net after the Tribe defence had failed to clear their lines properly to leave just one between the sides.
Armagh threw everything forward in a desperate effort to find an equaliser and McGeeney's men's resilience was rewarded with Crossmaglen clubman O'Neill showing nerves of steel to split the posts from a difficult angle in the dying stages.
