Brian Gavin has strongly refuted suggestions that he made comments about health problems fellow referee Pauric Pierce had experienced in the recent past.

The three-time All-Ireland hurling final referee was proposed for a one-month ban by the Offaly CCC last week for alleged verbal abuse of Pierce following the recent Offaly JFC quarter-final between Clara and Kilclonfert, only to be cleared by the Faithful County's Hearings Committee last Thursday night.

It meant that Gavin was able to take charge of last Sunday's All-Ireland SHC semi-final between Kilkenny and Waterford and to continue in his role as Clara GAA chairman.

"Under no circumstances did I make any comment about his health," Gavin says in this week's Tullamore Tribune.

Pierce confirmed to the same newspaper that he didn't hear Gavin making any reference to his health, but insists he was verbally abused and is demanding answers from the Hearings Committee as to how the Clara chairman could escape sanction.
