Sam and Liam set to welcome Obama in Moneygall

The Liam McCarthy and Sam Maguire Cups
17 May 2011

When President Barack Obama visits his ancestral home in Moneygall, there will be two other special guests in town, the Liam MacCarthy and Sam Maguire trophies.

Both cups will be on display in the window of a premises on Moneygall's main street owned by the Shanahan family of Toomevara, Moneygall's neighbouring parish to the south west. The presence of the cups will symbolise the strong links of the local communities in both counties Offaly and Tipperary to the GAA. They also extend a link between the President and the GAA established at the recent St. Patrick's Day Reception in the White House when Eoin Kelly of Tipperary and Bernard Brogan of Dublin were guests of President and Mrs. Obama.

While Moneygall is in County Offaly, the local GAA club plays in County Tipperary and has a long and proud history of contributing to the GAA in the premier county. Its most noted contribution came from the late Seamus Ó Riain who served as President of the GAA and was a former President and Chairman of Tipperary GAA Board. His family continue to play a prominent role in the GAA in Tipperary and other counties.

Both the Sam Maguire and Liam MacCarthy Cups have strong links to Offaly having been regular visitors to the county on after successful All-Ireland campaigns.

The Shanahan family have expressed their gratitude to Tipperary County Board and Cork County Board for facilitating the display of both cups during the President's historic visit.

Was at it alright. Very much a challenge game with no real pressure put on either forwards (as you can see by scoreline 3-22 to 26). seamie callanan looked on fire made bits of Ryan Dwyer but their keeper clattered him for his goal & had to go off, say its only a dead leg though. benny dunne & darren glesson very good too. young looked strong & john o'brien made a few great catches.

i've seen michael glesson play a few times for tipp & sars and i just can't see how he is on the tipp panel or am i just catching him on a bad day all the time?

B Maher is definitely out, they reckon he is 2 months away yet. He is strenghtening work on it the cast is off. Bonnar and Stapleton are fit however I dunno if they will srart because of limited playing time. Seamie Callinan will definitely start instead of Bonnar he is flying. The only other injury concern is Hennessy and they wouldn't put a timeframe on him. Think he was having a scan again this week but haven't heard anything on it.

no ive had this tripplanned since the draw was made itll be my first cork-tipp clash , unfortunately itll be a fairly low key one to start off with , ive gone to every dublin hurling game this year , so my commitment to the dubs cant be questioned , my mother is from clonmel so ive always had a soft spott for tipp , hopefull ill get to see a few dublin hurling games before the year is out but unfortunately it wont be this one , whats with your counties lack of commitment to its team?

No commitment issues Stekhli, if you had been to any Cork games in the past you will see how well this Cork team is supported. Im as dissapointed as anyone if its a small crowd in Thurles sunday, but its a national problem, not just Cork. Armagh reporting only 2,000 tickets sold for their game against Down, are you questioning their commitment? most of last weekends games had poor attendences. Its a pity, but its the thousands of young people immigrating thats the real problem here.

20 Carrolls I'd say your team will be pretty close with the exception of O Neill I think O Brien will start here. John O Keefe is unlucky to lose out to Young at half back but I think Young will start. The only other decision is whether they will start the Bonnar as he has limited match practice in the lead up to this game either Shane Bourke or Benny Dunne will take this spot if he is not selected. A long way to go for 2 in a row will hopefully win Sunday and we'll see after that

I think the back line lacks height, my only fear. However, cork are crap, this whole rivalry wont help them. Tipp by at least 15 points.
