A zoned game for underage with the idea of keeping defenders/midfielders/forwards in their own zone. Players alternate so they play in all 3 areas. I assume intention is also to avoid very strong players dominating from end to end - teams are normally 7/9/11 aside. The players themselves are not mad about it for obvious reasons. Certainly the smaller numbers on teams the better to ensure maximum ball time.
I have been involved recently with under 8's and 10's football and find it very good but some clubs are very slow to accept the concept. old dog and new tricks I'd say. We also play 15 aside standard football just to give the lads an idea on positions, team layout etc. I understand the primary schools have fully endorsed Go Games ie cumann na bunscoil.
As far as I can recall, the concept was criticised recently in Kilkenny because HQ were suggesting extending it to under 12's (currently 6's, 8's and 10's) and therefore eliminating competitions at that age group.
Going forward our club will continue to play both as we enter leagues that cater for each.
