The late Paddy McIntyre
Paddy McIntyre who died in a Dublin hospital was one of Offaly's outstanding footballers and hurlers in the thirties and forties. Paddy, a native of Cloghan with which club he won an Offaly juvenile football in 1929, was a member of the Offaly junior football team which won the 1935 Leinster title - Offaly's first provincial title in any grade of football.
Paddy, who moved to Dublin in the mid- Thirties, was soon a regular on the Offaly senior football team and a member of the famous Sean McDermotts team - every member of which was a county player and included such legendary figures as Eddie Boyle (Louth), Packie Boylan (Cavan), Tommy Banks (Dublin), Mick Connaire (Galway), and Joe Connor (Offaly)
McDermotts won the Dublin title in 1938 and it was in that year that Paddy became only the second Offaly man to win Leinster medals in both codes when he helped the county's junior hurlers win the Leinster championship. At this time he had thrown in his lot with the Dublin football team and it was as a Dublin representative that he won a Railway Cup medal in 1944.
However, he was soon back in the Offaly colours performing with distinction and he continued to feature on both teams until he retired in 1948
His passing will be mourned all over Offaly and his place in Offaly GAA history is secure
