Mangan, Patrick

The late Patrick Mangan Patrick 'Paddy' Mangan was born in Killane, Edenderry on March 21, 1920 and he passed to his eternal reward on August 28, 2006. Paddy was first and foremost a great and caring family man who is greatly missed by his wife Marie, sons Patrick, John, Richard and daughter Caroline. Paddy was a lover of all sports but especially GAA. He was the last surviving member of the first Edenderry team to win the Offaly Senior Football Championship in 1936 when he was only 16 years of age. He went on to win another Senior Championship 15 years later in 1951. Although he never played senior football for Offaly he was a member of the Offaly minor team who lost to Laois in the Leinster Championship when he had the pleasure of marking the great footballing legend Tommy Murphy, an experience that stood to him for the rest of his career. Also on the sporting front he was an accomplished tennis player and he had a great love of shooting and coursing and was one of the founding members of the Edenderry Coursing Club. His other love was farming land he farmed at different times in Killane, Kilpatrick (Tricknevin), Thornwell and Rathlumber. When he moved from Killane to Rathlumber he quickly made friends with all the neighbours especially 'The Frazer Dunne' and his wife Christina. Paddy was a great and generous neighbour to everyone in the 'Ra' and if he could not do you a good turn he certainly would not do you a bad one. Although small in stature he had a big and generous heart, and he will be sadly missed by his family, and a large circle of friends. Courtesy of The Offaly Express 11 October 2006
