The late Seamus Morris
The death occurred at the Regional Hospital. Portlaoise of well-known sportsman and businessman, Seamus Morris of Spollenstown, Tullamore. Mr Morris, who was aged 80, had been in ill health for some time.
The deceased was born in the USA and returned to Ireland at the age of seven with his mother and siblings following the tragic death of his father. He showed a great aptitude for gaelic football at an early age, and was captain of the first schools' team to be assembled from the national schools in Tullamore in 1940.
A very talented player, he was chosen for the local minor team at the age of 15 and played senior grade at 16. His football career was cut short when he emigrated to Britain in late 1944 where he lived until the early 1960s when he returned to Tullamore to open a very popular cafe in O'Connor Square.
He later owned and ran the Offaly Inn at Harbour Street until his retirement. Mr Morris maintained a great interest in sports throughout his life and he was very proud of his sons Joseph and Dermot who both represented Tullamore with distinction at senior
level in gaelic football.
The large attendance at the removal and at the Requiem Mass at the Church of the Assumption in Tullamore reflected the esteem and high regard in which Mr Morris was held. THe remains were interred at Clonminch Cemetery.
Mr Morris is survived by his wife Josie, sons Joseph and Dermot and daughters Carmel, Philomena and Mary.
