The late Jimmy Cahill
The death occurred of Jimmy Cahill, Cribben Terrace, Crinkle on the 15th March 2006, aged 74 years at the Regional Hospital Tullamore after a long illness.
Jimmy was born in Kilcolman in 1932, the eldest son of the late Pat and Mary Cahill. Jimmy attended school in Ballyeighan. The family subsequently came to live in the Crinkle area before acquiring a house at Cribben Terrace.
Jimmy worked with the late Mick Hunt, Building Contractor, most of his life.
Jimmy recalled the various contracts.Mick Hunt acquired particularly those he acquired from The Sisters Of Mercy, Wilmer Road.
He redeployed from the construction field to start up painting in the Birr area. Every job had to be completed to the highest standard and he ran a very successful business.
Jimmy had many interests including gardening, his rear gardening was a sight to behold and he had an array of beautiful vegetables. In the Spring period of the year he patronised the local market at Market Square, Birr on a weekly basis selling cabbage plants and wall flowers.
He was one of the founder members of Crinkle handball group. After acquiring the site for the alley from the late Joe Dooley at no cost, the dream had become a reality after a number of years with the construction of a magnificent alley. Fundraising was very difficult in this era but Jimmy and many others organised card drives, dances, raffles and quizzes to raise the funds.
Jimmy was proud of the input that the whole of the village put into the fundraising effort.
Jimmy with many other volunteers put their back into the project and on completion Jimmy let behind a state of the art facility. People recall him going to the site with a shovel and bag of cement on the carrier of his bike.
He derived great pleasure from the work and the committee's great work and efforts have provided one of the best handball alleys in Ireland. Leinster and All-Ireland Championships are held yearly in the alley. He was very proud of the early All-Ireland successes in the underage minor and junior grades and playing members who have represented the club and county have enjoyed All-Ireland successes. Jimmy always appreciated the assistance Pat and Eamon Sheeran and Billy Mullins gave to help in raising the standard of the game Jimmy was also a very active member of the Parish Council in Birr. He delivered envelopes in the Crinkle area for many years. He was a great community man and neighbour. He appreciated the support he gave and received from his brothers and particularly sister-in-law Lena, especially during his illness.
There was a large attendance at his evening removal to St. Brendan's Church and at his funeral and burial after concelebrated Mass to Clonoghill Cemetery.
Jimmy was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Coughlan.Sincere sympathy is extended to his brothers Paddy and Willie, nephew, nieces, sisters-in-law, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends.
