The late James Bracken
The late Mr. James (Jim) Bracken of Arden Vale and formerly Harbour Street, Tullamore, died May 8, 2006 in the Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore. Jim was a kind and generous man devoted to his family and a good neighbour. He was involved in many aspects of community life including Residents' Association, Tullamore Boy Scouts, Meals on Wheels and was a founder member of the Tullamore Musical Society.
He also greatly enjoyed sport and played football and hurling to minor level with Tullamore. He had a great interest also in horse and greyhound racing and was a successful greyhound owner and breeder in the 1950s and 1960s.
He trained as a confectioner in his youth, working in both McGinchey's Bakery, Tullamore and Lynam's of Maote and maintained that interest throughout his life. He spent many years in employment in Kilroy's Tullamore before moving to Spollen Concrete as storekeeper. He retired in 1988 due to ill health and became the homemaker, a role he greatly enjoyed.
Jim's health began to decline from the late 1990's but he maintained a very positive outlook and successfully came through many crises. He fully appreciated the excellent care and dedication of the staff at the Tullamore General Hospital, his consultants and his GP. In more recent times it was the wonderful support and help of the Community Care Staff, Irish Wheelchair Association and Centre for Independent Living that enabled him to live out his life at home.
He is sadly missed by his wife Helen, son Dermot, daughter Davina, sister Maura, brothers Sean, Tom and Micheal, and all extended family and friends.
His removal took place from Tullamore General Hospital to the Church of the Assumption. Mass was celebrated by Very Rev. Mons Sean Heaney P.P and assisted by Very Rev. Fr. Michael Walshe, P.P. Tubber with burial in Durrow Cemetery.
