The late Pat O'Connell The death has taken place of Tullamore man, Pat O'Connell (Convent View) who is one of a unique group of Offaly people to have referred an All-Ireland senior hurling final. Deceased was the man in the middle for the 1953 decider between Cork and Galway, which Cork won by 3-3 to 0-8. He was a brilliant all round sports man who featured prominently for Tullamore during a golden era for the club in the 1940s and '50s, winning senior championship medals in both football and hurling. Apart from his GAA love, deceased was also a fine all round sports man who specialised in sprint events in athletics. He was involved in the Tullamore Harriers for a number of years while he was also involved in boxing with the now extinct Emerald Boxing Club. A mechanic, he worked in Salts Ireland Ltd for years and was also actively involved in the local fire services, serving as Chief Fire Officer. 83 years of age, evidence of his popularity was provided at his removal and burial in Clonmich Cemetery. Predeceased a couple of months ago by his wife, Mary, he is survived by sons, Frank, Brendan, Damien and Vincent; daughters, Dorothy, Imelda, Lorraine and Ruth, brother, sisters, other relatives and a wide circle of friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended.
