The Late Jackie Ryland
The death of Mr Jackie Ryland, Main Street, Banagher, evoked widespread sympathy throughout the county, where he was widely known and highly respected.
Jackie was known throughout Offaly for his involvement in Gaelic Games and he was a highly regarded administrator in a variety of roles.
Jackie had not enjoyed good health in recent years but he bore his illness with great strength and fortitude. Only a couple of weeks before his death, he watched his beloved St. Rynagh's in action in the Offaly Championship.
He was a member of a prominent Banagher family and worked for many years in the family supermarket at Upper Main Street. He had a good nature and helpful manner and was always popular with patrons in the shop.
He had a long time involvement with St Rynagh's GAA Club serving as Club Secretary for many years and later as PRO. He took great pride in the achievement of the club over the years, and he always had an interest in seeing the club's underage teams prosper and develop.
He was not just interested in seeing the club succeed on the field, and was involved in the development of the facilities at the club's grounds, which gave him great satisfaction.
Jackie did not confine his work to St Rynagh's and also served on the County Board, holding positions on different committees at county level.
Jackie was a very popular figure in Banagher and the respect with which he was held was evidenced by the very large turnout for his Funeral.
He will be very sadly missed by everyone who knew him.
Deepest sympathy is extended to his brothers, Bobby and Billy, relatives and friends on their great loss.
His remains were removed to St Paul's Church, Banagher and burial followed Funeral Service in the adjoining cemetery.
