Brereton, Sean

June 30, 2003
The Late Sean Brereton Edenderry was in mourning last week following the sudden death of one of the town's best loved characters, the legendary Sean ("Dutch") Brereton. 70 years of age, the deceased was one of the best known personalities in the town and his vast popularity was reflected by the massive crowd at his funeral and removal. A native of Edenderry, Sean Brereton was a highly successful business man who worked in the building trade all his life and was renowned for his expertise and know how. He was also exceptionally well known in sporting circles and had a wide and varies interest in sport. He played football with Edenderry, winning a Senior Football Championship medal in the 1950s. However, his box sporting love was boxing and along with his brothers, Joe and Willie, he was mainstay of Edenderry Boxing Club and was instrumental in the thriving club that exists today. He won All-Ireland Boxing Championships while some of his sons represented Ireland in boxing, even competing in the Olympic games. Incidentally, the ring for boxing legend, Mulhammad Ali's World Championship fight in Croke Park was provided by the Breretons and that remained a source of great pride for the deceased. A great character who possessed a great sense of fun and had a quick wit, the deceased was also a great family man. He is survived by his wife, Doreen, eight sons, brother, Joe, sister Polly, grandchildren, other relatives and a wide circle of friends, all to whom sincere sympathy is extended.
