The Late Bill Kelly
Offaly and Ballycumber GAA were in mourning following the death of one of the best known GAA supporters in the county, the late Bill Kelly.
85 years of age, Bill had been ill health for the past couple of years but despite that he remained one of the most familiar figures at Offaly GAA games at all levels.
A native of Ballycumber and a loyal and dedicated servant to his home club, he was one of those unique group of individuals who attended games everywhere throughout the county when his own club was not involved.
He was as likely to be seen at an intermediate football game between Clonbullogue and Raheen in Walsh Island or a junior football game between Edenderry and Rhode in Croghan as he would be at a game involving his beloved home club or Offaly teams.
He also had the unique distinction of attending an amazing 137 All-Ireland senior hurling and football finals - The 1947 football decider between Kerry and Cavan in the Polo Grounds, New York was the only one to break his run.
A former player with Ballycumber,he served his club loyally and faithfully as an officer, holding every position from president down at some time or another. He was chairman for over fifteen years and also was part of the management team for the Ballycumber side that won the Junior Football Championship in 1948.
His love of gaelic games was infectious and he loved to meet and chat with fellow supporters from all club's at game.
He possessed an easy going and friendly manner, and also was very knowledgeable about games. He got immense satisfaction from all Offaly's successes and rarely missed on Offaly game at any grade.
An indication of the esteem in which he was held was provided a few years ago when Ballycumber GAA Club organised a tribute night to Bill Kelly. All of Offaly's senior, U-21 and minor All-Ireland winning football and hurling captains were present at that function, and it was perhaps the only occasion that this group of individuals gathered in the one room.
That was a fitting tribute for the support which Bill gave to the GAA in the county throughout his life.
A farmer, he was also a great family man and always held their interests at heart.
Predeceased by his wife, Bridie, he is survived by his sons, Pat, Liam and Gerry, daughter Teresa and sister, Liz Colgan (Tinnamuck, Tubber). Sincere sympathy is extended to them all his other relations and a wide circle of friends.
A further indication of his popularity was provided by the large crowd at his removal and funeral. He was buried in Boher Cemetery following Requiem Mass in the local Church.
