The Late Joe Dooley- Crinkle The passing of the late Joe Dooley, Crinkle,Birr occurred recently in the loving care of the matron and staff of Elmgrove Nursing Home, Birr. Joe was born in Crinkle 90 years ago and attended school in Crinkle and Birr. He was an excellent hurler and was a member of the great Birr team in the early 1930s, who were to win numerous Offaly Minor hurling titles. Joe had the pleasure of winning two titles. He always paid great tribute to Bro, Wilfred, who trained the Birr Minor hurling team in that era. Joe won three Senior hurling titles with the Birr hurlers in the late 30's and early 40s. Joe was injured in an accident that sadly ended his hurling career. He subsequently trained the Birr Senior Hurling team to win three more titles. He rarely missed a hurling or football match when Offaly were playing. Joe always travelled with a full load to the match in his Volkswagan car. He rarely missed a Munster final either. Joe was a rate collector with Offaly County Council and his generosity was well known throughout South Offaly. He was always involved in politics and was a member of the Fianna Fail party all his life. He was a presiding officer in the national and local elections. Joe was a great christian and always attended first mass every Sunday morning. Members of the Birr Club formed a guard of honour at his removal to St. Brendan's Church. His funeral took place to Clonoghill Cemetery following Concelebrated Mass. Sincere sympathy is extended to his brother Eddie, sister Sr. Cornelia, sister in laws, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Courtesy of the Midland Tribune 19th March 2005
