Late Paddy Lowry, Kinnitty

The recent death of Paddy Lowry, Forelacka, Kinnitty, saw the passing of a great friend, folklorist, historian and author. Born in the heart of the Slieve Blooms, of farming stock, Paddy worked the land, as did his ancestors before him. He loved the area in which he lived and visited the old people on many occasions and listened to their stories.
For many years he has been the voice of the mountains, regaling walkers and tourists with stories from generations ago. Paddy was involved with many organisations that helped put the area on the tourist map. Paddy's famous slide shows and bus tours helped to focus attention on the hills and valleys of his beloved landscape. His love for the area was infectious. He had a most extensive knowledge of his native parish, which he delighted in sharing with others. In addition, he had an endless supply of stories associated with local characters and places.

His involvement with local committees has been collossal. He was part of the cast of me dramatic class, which was formed in 1965. He was founder member of the Pioneer Association, the Slieve Bloom Association and he served on the Parish Council for many years. He was an ardent follower of the GAA and played minor, junior and senior with the Kinnitty Club. He was a member of Kilcormac Historical Society,

Ballyboy High Mileage and President of Ardara Walking Club Cadamstown. He was involved in many documentaries based on the Slieve Blooms, such as 'Landmark' which was shown on television, produced by Joe Murray, and Thames Television interviewed Paddy on the famine. and its impact on the area. His greatest achievement was publishing his memoirs' Kinnitty My Home in the Slieve Blooms'.

Perhaps we should finish on a more personal note of regret at the passing of a great neighbour and talented friend. Slan agus beannacht Paddy.

Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dhilis.
