Byrne, Michael Noel

January 12, 2012
It was with great sadness to hear of the passing of Michael Noel Byrne in December. Michael Noel was a very well known and liked man who worked for DE Williams for many years as a Sales man. He served the GAA in every capacity as player, referee and administrator. During his playing career he was a successful goalkeeper winning senior championships with both Tullamore and Durrow clubs, a very unique achievement. He then went on to become an intercounty referee.

Michael Noel was a very efficient official within Tullamore club and represented Tullamore at County Board level holding a variety of positions. For 18 years from 1989 to 2007 Michael Noel was Development Officer for the county in which he left his mark in many GAA parks around the county. Michael Noel was highly thought of in Tullamore GAA and was a Life President of our club. He had a great love of all things related to the GAA and in later years put a lot of work into promoting Scor within the County and indeed Leinster. His voice was a familiar one on match day in O Connor park as announcer on the public address system.

He had a great wit which supporters of Offaly and other counties became familiar with over the years. He was a very focussed man who carried out all his plans with great enthusiasm and dedication and he will be sadly missed. We extend our deepest sympathy to his loving wife Kay, sisters Kathleen, Olive and Dymphna, his sister in law Sr Therese and Lily, his brothers in law George and Paschal and his extended family. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
