Ladies football
Edenderry Senior and Minor Ladies teams are commencing their indoor training season this coming Monday Feb 13th at 8.00 pm in St Mary's Secondary School Hall under the guidance of new manager Willie Kelly and his team of Melissa Smith, Helen Carroll and Carmel Byrne. The ladies last held the county title in 2010 (a year in which they also won the Leinster title) and hope to win back the trophy this year after losing last year's final to neighbours Rhode. The first league game is due to be played on Sunday February 26th at 1.00 versus Rhode whilst the championship kicks off also against Rhode in early July. We wish Willie and all the girls the very best for the season.
The Under 14 and Under 16 teams under the guidance of Gabriel Gorman, Ronan Kavanagh and Sandra Blong are also back training this week for the coming season which we hope will be another successful one. Training will be every Monday and Thursday evenings at 7.00 in the GAA field for both teams. The Under 16 team are aiming for a three in a row this under after winning the county title for the past 2 years and we wish them the very best of luck in what would be a fantastic achievement for this bunch of talented young girls. The Under 14 team also have a big year ahead as the Feile competition is being held in Laois/Offaly this year so best wishes to them also.
Reminder that Underage Nursery Training continues each Friday evening in the Secondary School Hall and all girls in the area are welcome to attend with numbers attending growing each week. The Under 12 girls (those born in 2000 and 2001) train from 5.00 until 6.00pm with the under 10s and under 8s (those born in the years 2002 to 2006) training from 6.00 until 7.00 pm. There is a charge of €2 per session to cover the rent of the hall.
Junior football
Edenderry 2-8 0-12 Clara................
Edenderry juniors made a positive start to the season with a two point win over Clara in Clara on Sunday morning.
Played in terrible conditions it came down to two decisive goals in each half that won it for the reds, the first from John 'Gooch' Gorman and the second from Paddy Lynch.
Clara started the brighter and took the lead on seven minutes from a pointed free but young Jamie Dolan, making his adult debut, leveled three minutes later from a free. Two minutes later after some great work from Pat Moloney and another debutant Mark Hoey, John Gorman sent the ball crashing to the back of the net. Philip Farrell and Jamie Dolan added further points again after very good work from Mark Hoey to stretch the reds lead to five points. Clara pulled one back in the twenty third minute but Philip Farrell converted a free after a foul on Paddy Lynch. In the closing minutes of the first half Clara added two points to leave a goal between the sides at half time.
Half Time:
Edenderry 1-4 0-4 Clara
Clara had the better start to the second half and within the opening ten minutes had actually leveled the game. It took Edenderry until the fourteenth minute to register a score but it came at a vital time and once again the very impressive Cian Lawton and Mark Hoey were involved in the build up. Cian played a long ball into Mark Hoey who used his power to win the ball and lay it off to the oncoming Pat Moloney who slotted over his first point to give the reds back the lead. A poor kick-out from Clara resulted in Dan Ryan sending the ball back into the full forward line and this time Mark Hoey pulled the trigger himself and scored to give the reds a two point lead. Clara pointed in the seventeenth minute to reduce the margin to the minimum but a Pat Moloney point in the twentieth minute helped ease the pressure. Two minutes later Edenderry won a free near the '45 yard line and a quick ball in from Philip Farrell was met by the fist of Paddy Lynch who punched the ball into the net to give Edenderry a five point cushion. John Gorman extended the lead to six just a minute later and in the final five minutes Clara notched over four points to leave just two between the sides at full time.
Overall the new Edenderry management team of Adrian 'Bab's Forde, Naomhan Farrell and Ray Lynch will be very pleased with their sides start to the season. It is never easy to gain two points in Clara and Sunday's win was no different. On the day Edenderry were best served by Mark Hoey at full forward and in particular Cian Lawton who was outstanding at midfield.
Man of the match: Cian Lawton
Team sheet:
Ciaran Cummins, Daniel Moloney, Stephen Abbott, Jason Farrell, Colin McNamara, Dan Ryan, Philip Farrell(0-2), Cian Lawton, Paddy Lynch(1-0), Pat Moloney(0-2), Adrian Farrell, Jamie Dolan(0-2), Mark Hoey(0-1), John Gorman(1-1)
