U16's record huge victory
Edenderry… 4-22
Clara………. 2-3

Edenderry U16's were back in Championship action on Monday night and recorded a massive twenty five point beating of Clara. There was just three points between the sides at half time after Clara scored a goal in the twenty ninth minute but in bizarre fashion Edenderry also hit the post no less than seven times.

Jamie Dolan opened the scoring after just twenty seconds after Alex Kenny played him through. Daryl O'Connor doubled their lead after two minutes and Edenderry were well on top. Clara registered their first score of the game after five minutes from a free but it was quickly cancelled out by Ciaran Farrell again after some great play from Alex Kenny. Clara responded well and managed to score a great goal on eight minutes to give them a one point lead and it took Edenderry until the thirteenth minute to equalise when Alex Kenny pointed from a free. Just one minute later Ciaran Farrell was first to react to a Oran Lawton effort which struck the post and Farrell made no mistake finishing the ball to the back of the net.

With twenty minutes gone Clara pointed their second free but a late flurry of points from Adam Mahon, Ross Mangan and two from Jamie Dolan appeared to give the reds a comfortable half time lead. With just one minute remaining Clara won a free and the shot was dropped short in the square but the ball struck an Edenderry defender and went in leaving the half time score 1-8 to 2-2.

Half Time:
Edenderry 1-8
Clara 2-2

While nothing is ever certain this game was effectively over after just three minutes of the second half. Edenderry started at a blistering pace and after just eighteen seconds Aaron McDonnell had pointed for Edenderry. Just thirty seconds later Alex Kenny added his second of the game and less than a minute later pointed his third. Mikie Clear and Jamie Dolan rounded off a great three minutes with a point a piece to leave double scores between the sides. On eight minutes Ciaran Farrell pointed again and two minutes later Aaron McDonnell scored a great goal to put twelve points between the sides. Two points inside a minute for Jamie Dolan brought his tally to six and two minutes later Craig Monaghan pointed before Leslie Nolan rattled the back of the net for Edenderry's third goal of the game. With seventeen minutes gone in the second half Matthew O'Grady scored what was arguably the score of the game when he picked the ball up in the full back line and ran the length of the pitch and slotted over his first point of the day. Within two minutes Edenderry converted another four points, one from Leslie Nolan, two from Adam Mahon and one from Aaron McDonnell. Clara scored their first and only point of the second half in the twenty first minute and Stephen Connolly rounded off Edenderry's scoring for the day when he scored a goal in the twenty fifth minute.
Edenderry will be delighted to secure another win in the championship and leaves them on course for the knockout stages. It was a great team display. The game was well refereed by Martin Carthy

Seniors beat Rhode in league semi final

Edenderry 2-9
Rhode 0-12

Edenderry seniors advanced to the league final for the first time since 1997 after they recorded a three point victory over near neighbours Rhode.
Played at beautifully prepared grounds in Ballyfore on a fine summers evening Edenderry were fully deserving of their win and even managed to afford a missed penalty in the first half.

Edenderry got out of the traps first when Dan Nolan and Ciaran Hurley combined to put Martin Keogh through who fisted the ball over the bar after just thirty seconds. Rhode responded three minutes later when Paschal Kellaghan pointed for Rhode. On six minutes Rhode took the lead through Niall Darby when he pointed from a free. There was a lull of seven minutes without a score but on thirteen minutes it was Paschal Kellaghan who put Rhode two ahead. Three minutes later Niall Darby kicked a great score for Rhode and they appeared to be in control of the game.

Edenderry opted their game and just one minute later Stuart Cullen pointed his first of the game which he quickly followed up with his second just three minutes later after Sean Pender broke out of defence with the ball, laid it off to Basil Malone who gave it Cullen for Edenderry's third score of the game. Derek Kelly levelled the sides on twenty three minutes after some great fielding from Richie Dalton but it was instantly cancelled out by Niall Darby just one minute later. Their was just two minutes to half time when Ciaran Hurley kicked his first score of the game to level the sides at 0-5 a piece but Edenderry were awarded a penalty in injury time after a foul on Martin Keogh. Stuart Cullen stepped up but his effort was brilliantly saved by Rhode goalkeeper Eddie McDonnell.

Half time
Edenderry 0-5
Rhode 0-5

Having trailed for most of the first half Edenderry re-grouped at half time and put in an excellent second half performance. Mark Young opened the scoring after one minute to give the reds the lead, a lead they never lost for the remainder of the game. With the second half just three minutes old Stuart Cullen won a free which he took quickly and played through Ciaran Hurley who coolly slotted the ball to the back of the net and put Edenderry in front 1-6 to 0-5. Two minutes later Niall McNamee reduced the deficit to three points but two excellent 40 yard points inside a minute from wing back Dan Nolan shot the reds into a five point lead. Rhode enjoyed a four minute spell and kicked three points, one from Eoin Rigney and two from Niall Darby, one free.

There was now just two between the sides but on the fifteenth minute Mark Young put Stuart Cullen through and Stuart kicked his third point of the game to give the reds back a three point cushion. Four minutes later Rhode took a short kick-out to Alan McNamee who was tackled hard by Johnny Hurst and the ball broke loose to Basil Malone who played off a slip pass to the on-rushing Ciaran Hurley who made up over 40 yards, veered to his left and finished the ball to the back of the net to put Edenderry six points ahead with just eleven minutes to go. In the 21st minute Paschal Kellaghan registered his third score of the game but there would be no more scores until deep into injury time when a Niall Darby free and a Niall McNamee point closed the gap to three points. Edenderry were not to be denied however and referee Padraig Pierce called full time. Edenderry were reduced to 14 men with seven minutes remaining after Johnny Hurst received two yellow cards but the reds held out in the end to record their first win over Rhode since the 6th June 2006.

On the day Edenderry management could be very pleased with the effort they received from every player. Sean Pender and David Hanlon were excellent with Derek Kelly and Richie Dalton coming out on top of the midfield battle. Basil Malone won a tremendous amount of breaks around the middle and overall Edenderry deserved their win and to reach their first league final since 1997.

Minors defeat Rhode in Championship

Edenderry 2-12
Rhode 1-9

Edenderry minors maintained their 100% record in the championship with a six point victory over Rhode on Wednesday night. Edenderry were the better team on the night and fully deserving of their win with Sean Doyle hitting an impressive 1-6.

Edenderry started brightly and with just thirty seconds gone Peter O'Neill pointed for Edenderry. Just two minutes later Sean Doyle kicked his first of the night and the reds were looking impressive. Rhode replied instantly with their first point of the game but four minutes later Peter O'Neill stretched Edenderry's lead with a pointed free. Rhode again hit back with their second point and both sides battled hard for possession over the coming minutes.

Twelve minutes into the first half Edenderry sprung into life and two points from Sean Moriarty and one from a Sean Doyle free gave the reds a comfortable four point lead. After twenty two minutes Sean Doyle was again to the fore and a great solo effort lead to Sean finishing the ball to the back of the net to give Edenderry a commanding lead. However Rhode didn't lay down and quickly responded with a goal and a pointed free. Sean Doyle again pointed for Edenderry and deep into injury time Rhode had the final say of the first half to leave just three between the sides

Half time
Edenderry 1-7
Rhode 1-4

Rhode started the second half the stronger team after just four minutes had scored two free's to leave the minimum between the sides. Aaron McDonnell pointed on five minutes to extend Edenderry's lead but it was cancelled out just one minute later from another Rhode free. Eight minutes into second half Sean Moriarty took off on a solo run when he cut in the end line but his shot was blocked on the line by a Rhode defender, however in bizarre circumstance an attempted clearance struck the back of another Rhode defender and went in to the net.

There was then a seven minute lull but Sean Doyle pointed a free on fifteen minutes and quickly followed it up two minutes later his fifth point of the game. Rhode hit back with two more points, both from free's but once again it was that man again Sean Doyle who kicked a point for the reds to put them back five points ahead. Dan Nolan, now operating at full forward had the final say of the game when he kicked a point in twenty ninth minute.

Edenderry can be very pleased with this result as it now leaves them top of the group with just one game remaining against St Broughans. Defensively Edenderry were very sound and restricted Rhode to just five points in the second half, all from free's.

Seniors beaten in league final

Edenderry Seniors were beaten by seven points after extra time on Saturday night in the divsion one league final.

Edenderry seniors suffered defeat in their first league final in fourteen years after extra time but the game was marred by a controversial assault on Edenderry minor & senior footballer Sean Doyle with just three minutes to go in normal time. The reds put on an exhibition in the second half however a combination of a poor first half display & the assault of young Sean Doyle rocked the reds to the core.

Ballycumber opened the scoring after four minute but four minutes later Derek Kelly hit back for the reds after some good play from Basil Malone. Ballycumber took control of the game from here on in and points in the fourteenth, fifteenth and eighteenth minute gave them a three point lead. All Ballycumber's scores came courtesy of Ruairi Guinan, two from free's and Edenderry were struggling to cope with the big man. Ballycumber pressed on and three further points, two from Ruairi Guinan & one from Fergal Daly gave Ballycumber a six point lead as injury time approached. Johnny Hurst pointed for Edenderry in the first minute of stoppage time but Edenderry can have little complaints as they performed poorly in the first half.

Half time:
Edenderry 0-2 0-7 Ballycumber 0-7

Edenderry started the second half the better side and after just forty seconds Ciaran Hurley pointed from a free after a foul on Stuart Cullen. Ciaran Hurley pointed again after six minutes from a free and just one minute later Stuart Cullen reduced the gap to just one point after superb work from Captain Richie Dalton. Ballycumber responded with a point from Ruairi Guinan but Ciaran Hurley quickly pointed for the reds before an excellent Johnny Hurst point left the minimum between the sides.

Martin Keogh pointed to draw the teams level with sixteen minutes gone but just two minutes later Ballycumber took the lead with another pointed free. Keith McGuinness once again levelled the sides but yet again another 'free' brought Ballycumber back into the game. Stuart Cullen levelled the game at ten a piece before a Keith McGuinness fisted point gave the reds a lead.

What happened next has no place in GAA when young Sean Doyle went for the ball he was viciously assaulted by an official from Ballycumber, completely not in keeping with the spirit in which the game had been played. Edenderry were cleary rattled by the incident and with just three minutes to go it certainly affected concentration. Colm Quinn kicked a late free in the thirty second minute to equalise the game and bring it to over time.

Full time:
Edenderry 0-11 Ballycumber 0-11

Edenderry started the extra time the brighter and a Derek Kelly point gave them the lead but unfortunately for Edenderry it would be their only score of the half. Ballycumber kicked five unanswered points, two from Ruairi Guinan & one from Fergal Daly to lead at half time in extra time 0-16 to 0-12.

In the second half of over time Ballycumber got the first two scores of the game, the first from a point despite a blatant sliding tackle and the next was a goal which gave them a commanding lead. Mark Young kicked a late point in injury time from a '45 to reduce the deficit to seven points.

Overall this was a great game for the neutrals, Ballycumber were by far the better team in the first half, Edenderry dominated the second half and extra time was probably a fair way to settle things. However the game will be overshadowed by the cowardly act in which saw minor footballer Sean Doyle viciously assaulted and it perhaps changed the course of the game.

Edenderry 0-13 1-17 Ballycumber

Hurlers beaten by Drumcullen

Edenderry 1-7 1-11 Drumcullen

Edenderry hurlers suffered more heartache with their third defeat in as many games this past Sunday against Drumcullen.

Drumcullen opened the scoring from a pointed free which was cancelled out just thirty seconds later from a Ger Hanlon point. A minute later Ger Hanlon pointed again to put Edenderry a point ahead. Edenderry then took control of the game and points Bill Glennon, Eoghan Kelly & two from Ger Hanlon gave the reds a four point lead. The reds appeared to be cruising into half time but in the first minute of injury time Drumcullen scored a goal despite a brilliant initial save from Brendan McCabe.

Half time:
Edenderry 0-6 Drumcullen 1-2

The goal knocked Edenderry for six and within the first five minutes Drumcullen had scored two points to put them a point ahead. Eoghan Kelly levelled after nine minutes but it would be Edenderry's last score until the twenty sixth minute. Drumcullen hit three points in the mean time to give them a three point lead but Edenderry got back level when Ger Noonan scored a goal with just four minutes remaining. However it was not to be Edenderry's day and Drumcullen pointed four late scores to give them a comfortable win.

Edenderry will be very disappointed with this loss as it leaves them pointless after three games.

Team sheet: Brendan McCabe, Paddy McCarthy, Shane Connell, Thomas Faye, Shane Kelly, David Hanlon, Johnny Geraghty, Paul Glennon, Paul Hanlon, Dave Ryan, Eoghan Kelly(0-2), Ger Hanlon(0-4), Ger Noonan(1-0), Declan Cummins, Bill Glennon(0-1)

Man of the Match: Brendan McCabe

Referee: Ciaran Groome
