Late Willie Joe Delaney
The death of Willie Joe Dealney, Glebe Street, Birr, Co.Offaly
Son of the late William and Margaret Delaney, Willie Joe died aged 82 years.
During his life he served his life as a printer with the Midland Tribune Newspaper before relocating to Galway where he again worked as a Printer, this time with the Connacht Tribune, staying there for over 40 years.
Willie Joe returned to Birr later in life after he had retired where he lived with his sister Margaret.
A great hurler in his day, Willie Joe hurled for Offaly and at club level also won a County Championship medal with Birr in 1948. He also had hurled for Birr school teams, having been educated at primary level at the presentation brothers school before commencing secondary level education with the VEC in Birr.
In his life, the quiet and friendly Willie Joe was well known as one who loved to have a 'flutter on the horses'. He also enjoyed going to Rohan's Pub for a laugh and the all important craic and he appreciated Tommy Rohan for carrying him home from the pub.
There was a large attendance at his removal which took place at St Brendan's Church in Birr and after Funeral Mass burial was in Clonoghill Cemetery.
He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Noel, Fred and Michael. Sincere sympathy is extended to his sisters Christina and Margaret. In-laws, nieces and nephews, relatives, friends and neighbours.
