Former Offaly goalkeeper Padraic Kelly has announced his retirement from club football.

Kelly has been a great servant to both club and county down through the years and at 35, he has decided to call time and an adult career that last almost two decades.

For 15 years he was involved with the Offaly footballers from 1994 to 2009 when he made his last appearance for the Faithful county in the All-Ireland qualifier defeat to Wexford.

The Shamrocks shot stopper actually played his last year with the club out the field as he lined out at corner back in the club's defeat to Rhode in the county semi final, a role that he was content to fill in the short term.

"I didn't enjoy last year's football," he lamented. I played outfield and that is not what I want at this stage of my life.

"I have had problems with my knees, back and hand and it time to listen to my body. Everything is beginning to give trouble. I had a cruciate operation a year and a half ago. I don't want to go on and find in a few years time that I can't kick football, play golf or lift a child." Tweet
