The Late Michael Kennedy
On 11th February 2010 Michael Kennedy, Crinkle Birr passed away in the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore, after a relatively short illness.
Michael was one of the long established Crinkle/Birr families. He was born to Michael and Mary Kennedy of Boherdeel in 1927.
His introductory year in school was spent in the Convent Of Mercy School, Birr where he became one of 'Miss Hill's babes.' The rest of his school years completed in the old school in Crinkle. Even when the family moved to Clonoghill, he continued to journey through the fields to school in Crinkle with his brothers and sister.
As a young man he worked in the Bar and grocery of WF O'Meara, Main Street., Birr. There he met Rita (Cahill) whom he married in 1968. He also worked for DE Williams, DP Hoctor and Dan Milne. He was a competent grocery assistant and an expert Bacon hand.
Michael had an abiding love for all things Irish, especially Ceili Music and the GAA. he attended the Fleadhs in the early 1960s journey to Thurles, Enniscorthy and Boyle by scooter with Rita as his pillion passengers.
In his youth he was an active member of the Crinkle GAA Hurling team known as the 'White Rovers.' He was on the successful Intermediate team of 1951, an event he often recalled with great pride. He was a keen gardener and supplied family and friends with fresh produce every Summer.
Although he was a quiet, reserved man he enjoyed a sing song at the local hostelries and when called upon would give a rousing rendition of "The Bould Thady Quil.'
Michael was a familiar figure as he cycled from Crinkle to Birr for his visits to the Church, then on to the bookies for a flutter on the horses and home by the Cemetery where he tended family graves and prayed for the dead.
Michael died peacefully surrounded by his wife Rita, son Kevin, daughter in law Josephine and his extended family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Rita, his son Kevin, his daughter in law Josephine (Boland), his sisters Patricia (Corrigan), Maura (Garahy), Anne (Shannon), Rita (Boyd), nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
