Parkinson, Christy

March 10, 2009
The death of Mr Christy Parkinson, Roscrea Road, Birr occurred recently and evoked much sympathy in the area. Mr Parkinson, who was born in 1927, was a well known member of the local community and was held in high regard by all who knew him. In his twenties he worked as a driver for Egan's Hotel, Main Street, and had the privilege of driving one of the early Ford cars. He took a lot of pride in looking after it. Following that, he moved from there to Bridge's Garage, where he was a mechanic. Christy left there in 1960 and moved into Erin Peat Products Derrinlough. He worked there as a fitter, and manufactured and maintained the machinery used for the production of hanging baskets and seeding pots. He retired in December 1992 after 32 years of service. In 1959, he travelled to London for his sister's wedding, where he met his wife, Teresa. They married in July 1962. Shortly after his retirement in February 1993, he helped set up the Crinkle GAA lotto with other members of the club. He worked hard and was the driving force in building up the customer base to what it is today. He was a founder member of the Birr Credit Union Committee for Marian Hall for many years. Christy took great pride in his community and was always willing to lend a hand when possible. Deepest sympathy is extended to his wife, Teresa, son, Robert, daughters Denise and Doreen, daughter-in-law, Maria, sons-in-law, Chris and Dave, grandchildren, Sophie, Rachel, Aidan, Emily and Christopher, brother Denis, sister, Agnes, relatives and friends. His remains were removed to St Brendan's Church, Birr and following Funeral Mass there the following morning, he was laid to rest in Clonoghill Cemetery.
