Brophy, Michael

August 20, 2008
THE parish of Killeigh and wider surrounding areas were deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Michael (Mick) Brophy aged 66 on July 26 last at his residence in the Meelaghans. Mick bravely battled his illness for the past twelve months and remained exceptionally upbeat throughout. Mick was described as an absolute gent, extremely generous to family, friends, local churches, charities and GAA clubs. He was an unassuming man of high principles and extreme intellect. Mick worked in England and Canada mining coal in the early years. He served his time as a fitter with Bord na Mona, before giving 32 years of fine service to Waterways Ireland along the royal and grand canals. His works remains to be seen in the steelwork along the canal lock across the country. Mick was a passionate follower of GAA and actively followed both Offaly and his native Killeigh GAA Club. Mick has left a fine legacy and memories behind him which was indicated by the immense turn out for the entire funeral proceedings, which included An Taoiseach. He was removed from his home on July 28 to St Patricks Church Killeigh, where he was given a guard of honour by past and present Killeigh GAA players and a tranquil lone piper on Monday evening. Mick's Waterways Ireland former work colleagues performed a guard of honour for his burial on Tuesday, July 29. Mick's coffin was draped with an old style Killeigh jersey, which represented his love of hurling and his participation in the U21a final for the club in the early 60's. Father Stapelton (PP) and Monsignor Coonan officiated at the funeral proceedings. Mick's family would ike to express sincere thanks to the Oncology Units of St James Hospital and Tullamore for great care they provided him. Special praise is also due to the palliative care team headed up by Sr Teresa that allowed him to wish to be cared for in his own home among family and friends. The family is so grateful also for the support and generosity of his wide circle of relations and friends over the period of his illness and funeral. Mick is survived by his loving wife Eileen, daughters, Deidre & Una , son, Andy, brothers Liam, Gerry, Paddy, JJ, sisters Margaret, and Marie; and a wide circle of relations and friends. He will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.
