MINOR U17 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The long awaited start of the new structure Minor (U17) Football Championship began disappointingly for Na Fianna Minor Footballers No 1 Team as they lost to St Broughans in Rd 1 last Wednesday evening in Geashill on a scoreline of 1-10 to 2-05. In the first half the scores were at a premium as 3 points from Jacob Beatty and 1 from James Nolan had Na Fianna in front 0-04 to 0-03 at the break with Mikey Cunningham getting 2 of St Broughans 3 points. Na Fianna got a great start to the second half on 2 mins when a perfect pass from Jacob Beatty to Ryan Dunne on the edge of the square and he blasted the ball to the net for the opening goal. St Broughans responded with 3 points in a row before Na Fianna struck for their 2nd goal on 10mins which a quick break upfield saw Adam Mangan pick out the in-running Jacob Beatty and he drilled his shot to the net. A point each followed before St Broughans got right back into it on 19 mins with a goal from their danger man Mikey Cunningham and he put over the equalising point immediately before also striking over the winning 2 points in the last 5 mins.

NA FIANNA: David McElduff, David Carthy, Aaron Flanagan, David Boland, Conor Owens, Adam Strong, Glen Hassett, Emmett Curley, Ryan Strong, Ryan Dunne (1-00), Mikey Buckley, Adam Mangan Jacob Beatty (1-03), Lee Mulpeter (0-01), James Nolan (0-01).

It was a more sucessfull start to the Minor Championship for the Na Fianna No 2 Team as they easily accounted for Gracefield's only side last Sunday morning in Geashill winning on a scoreline of 2-12 to 1-04. Trailing midway through the half 0-04 to 0-03 a 4 point haul in the final 10 mins of the half gave Na Fianna the lead at the break 0-06 to 0-03. Na Fianna couldn't have asked for a better start to the second half scoring the 2 goals inside the first min, the first a rasper of a shot from the wing by James Bryan palmed by the keeper into the top left corner of the net, the second a shot which was blocked down by the keeper where Adam Mangan was on hand to tap it into the net. Over the next 15 mins Na Fianna added 6 points to Gracefield's 1-01 to wrap it up, Thereafter for the final 14 mins it remained scoreless as Na Fianna were content to see it out with the win secured.
