Well? What changes, if any do you think Horan and his team should make to the starting 15?
Personally I think Doherty has to come in for Varley, he is better coming off the bench with 10 or 15 minutes left. Freeman has to start (AND STAY!) at full-forward. Also I'm coming around to the idea of McGarrity at full-back to mark Donaghy. Does anyone know if he is fully fit yet?

killer_88_ - I am surprised you started a thread like this. You are going around like a rabbit hopping from thread to thread saying we have no chanse, why bother going etc etc.

I'm with you here Killer88, i would feel a lot more at ease with McGarrity on Donaghy.

I suspect we might see Alan Feeney back at fb... he's a specialist in the position and is tall and physical enough to keep the ball away from Donaghy - Ronan might be lots of things, but he's not that physical. Besides Kerry rotate Donaghy which would force Mayo to have RMcG follow him... I'd hate to think what might happen if Ronan got isolated at fb marking Darren O'Sullivan with Kerry playing low ball in front of them! If I were to pick Ronan to start anywhere it'd be in the right corner forward position to come back along that wing for kickouts and drift in towards the square when Mayo are in possession, and so to give a high ball option (same role as Donaghy in a way), but that would mean leaving out Doherty/Varley. This might be a plan B rather than a starting position, if things turn a bit sticky after 20 mins. So apart from Cafferkey dropping out for Alan Feeney (which is 50/50) and Doherty starting again, I can't see too many other changes from the previous lineups.

What about starting mcgarrity in the half forward line, and have him playing a sweeper type role bringing one of the full forwards out to the half forward line. That way he could drop back into the full back line to help with the ariel threat of donaghy without having the responsibility of minding the shop and becoming isolated. Or maybe Mayo should not worry too much about it and play there own game.

@wfkerry just might be the fact that they have beaten us very well the last few times we've met plus they (kerry) don't peak until the semi final and final!!!!! and always play themselves down

livenhope well said how many times has it been said kerry not playing well not the team they were year in year out. Kerry will be a serious threat and will look at a great opportunity to land sam this year, pressure of beating cork gone pressure of beating tyrone or getting bet by tyrone. They wont fear mayo and they know the hype that surrounds dublin. Donegal not too sure about them they just dont have much of a history which is a good thing.

Kerry beat cork in the first 15 minutes, expect them to beat Mayo in first 10 minutes and then set back and laugh at Mayo players running around the field like headless chickens

Only change i can see is Jason Doherty starting this time round. why change a back line that held Cork to one score in the 2nd half? Certainly don't want to bring in Alan Feeney at FB as he would struggle on Donaghy.
Mayo should win midfield that's a plus & they are leaking big scores at the back, watch back the Limerick game they should have scored a few goals.

mayo have to take donagh seriously doesnt matter how he has playd up to this he can still have a man of the match performance the next day so they have to put the right lad on him and cafferky isnt the right lad, feeny wud be a bit better but they need sumone who is big and that will batter donaghy wont let him catch anything and then also be able to follow him out the field and i dont think anyone in the squad can do that, kieran conroy or jason gibbons might but i dont know, and then there is cooper..i think we just have to hope he has an off day and only scores a 4 or 5 points!!

Kerry's defence will be better the next day Gaa_lover - they've a few players coming back from injury, so with a couple of these starting and a couple more positional changes we can't expect them to be so porous. With Cafferkey/AFeeney, I'd just be worried that Donaghy's 4 inches in height over Cafferkey might be too much of a disadvantage considering Donaghy can get off the ground well too. Alan Feeney played on Donaghy in the league match and even though Kerry won, the match was low-scoring (a late Kerry penalty was the decisive score, if you remember?). Maybe Cafferkey is the man to take on Donaghy, but the Kerry attack is a different animal compared to what Cork put out the last day. It's certainly going to be a bigger challenge to win this game, regardless of who's playing down Kerry's chances, and the lads know that the bar is higher, but they'll pose a few problems of their own and will take their game to the Kingdom. After that may the best team win in a proper fashion (so hopefully the ref and his team will have good games too).

I know the league is a different animal but donaghy and cooper only managed something like one score between them when the two sided played earlier in the year in castlebar. Looking at kerry the last day I think donaghy will be needed midfield sunday week.

The league is a different animal & judging Kerry on last performances can be dangerous aswell, 2009 Kerry struggled past Antrim,Longford & Sligo when they were paired with Dublin the dubs couldn't cope as Kerry clicked into gear on the day.
As said already Kerry are not good in midfield or defense however if their forward line is on fire they will blow most teams away.

I think McGarritty isn't aggressive enough to play in midfield. A great fielder in the middle of the park but not the same when Kerry vary the ball into Donaghy. Putting him at No. 3 against one of the most dangerous target men of the past 5 years would be lunacy. Just cos Brady gave him a few digs and did well against him in '06 final isn't good enough reason to try a midfeielder against him. Cafferkey is the best available option, give him a chance.
