Standard of Referees in the County

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Anyone read the post match interview with the Melvin Gaels manager in this weeks Observer? I agree with all he says in it. The stanard of football his poor but the Ref's are defo not helping things.

The ref may not have been great. I wasnt there but both John Connolly and Colin Regan alluded to the fact that neither team wanted to play football at the start only to box each other. If two teams are intent on fighting there is very little a ref can do about it. If he sent off a few people in the first ten minutes he would be pilloried for spoiling the game. He's dammed if he does and dammed if he doesn't. Its the same on the Sunday game on TV. A bad game and its the refs fault. Its a bit like the Mohill club - lose a game and its the ref ho done it. I thought it was James Glancy that scored the winning goal for Manor!!

Said it before on here there has to be a uniform standard for refs across the board..yet another example of co. board incompetence, div. 4 & 5 and U14 and 16 leagues are the places to trial all our younger new referees and give them the chance to prove they can competently ref a game, they should also ref all underage league and maybe a few Div. 1 games with experienced refs as their linesmen to help them along..and the referee fitness and competency tests should be mantatory and. Strictly adhered to...

Anyone able to tell me why to the County board don't release who the refs are on the week of the games? There was a time when the Observer had there names in the paper on the Wednesday. Whats the story with this? its all very hidden.

Generally they are always on the website. Reason they are not in the paper, could be that the nominated referee has not confirmed his availability at the time of going to print.

bad silage are you not a ref yourself

one of the first things taught in the course is, there is never a wrong time to produce the cards, if its justified then let them have it, if things are getting messy then call in the captains take a few seconds and lay down the law, i witnessed 6 games over the summer and i am appalled at some of the refereeing performances i witnessed, fitness levels and hovering between the 2 45s in one game, being a good club man and always available does not make for good referees

Dammed if ya do and dammed if ya don't

I think we all agree that the standard in the county is the worst the GAA has to offer by a mile

The game has gone to a level where you train hard to be a spectator as the referee plays his version of the game

It's gone that bad that small minded petit grudges are brought from outside everyday life onto the field

And if a player shows a bit of style and pulls off a dummy or a false pass a free is given against them

And then when you walk away with the mouth shut the free is moved forward 13meters

It takes the passion out of the game when some lad in his mid 40s-50s doesn't like a young lad because he might have a bit of front or be boisterous and pulls a few tricks on the ball

Then of course the ref ego sets in and this lad pulled a class dummy so let's give him a yellow and if his eyes happen to blink it's a straight red

It does happen in other counties at the very bottom levels but not in senior/inter/jnrA

The game in leitrim has taken a slide Ita no longer about the 30 players that want to win its about some middle aged man who wants an audience while he decides to put manners on the players because of who they are or what club or townland their from or they pulled a trick with the ball that he never seen before

It is probably going to be the case that some lad will get the line for performing an Owen mulligan like goal or dancing his feet like Sean cavanagh. All because of bad refereeing

And that's just football the hurling refs are worse than dire

Refs in Leitrim are brutal. They hate some of the clubs they are refereeing in a game and make decisions accordingly. On the other hand, there is absolutely zero respect for refs and they get dogs abuse. Why would anyone want to do it really.

coppers.abu I agree with everything you say refs are biased against certain teams and give nothing to the dislike. I have said that before

Things are not getting any better with the standard of ref's in the county! Surely we should give some younger blood ago? There are two many older ref's who are gone of the boil

How often are ref courses held? And surely if your over 65 you should not be a ref anymore..Only in Leitrim are there refs that sit in the middle of the field and ref from there.

Was Drumreilly versus Aughavas. Ref must of been poor for drumreilly to get the win!
