GPA join Friday fixture row

June 19, 2013

Carlow and Laois will play in the first ever Friday night championship match.
The GPA may intervene in the decision of the CCCC to fix the All-Ireland SFC qualifier between Carlow and Laois for a Friday night.

Players from both panels have expressed their annoyance at the scheduling of the game on social media and the GPA may make representations on their behalf but only with the co-operation of the players.

The Players' body has no issue with a championship game being fixed for a Friday night but maintains players should have been consulted in advance of the decision.

"We haven't been consulted and as far as we know the players were consulted," GPA head of communications Sean Potts explained to the Examiner.

"We are currently liaising with the players over what consultation if any happened.

"We're on record as saying Friday evening games are a progressive step and while we don't disagree with that we said for it to take place there would have to be consultation with the squads.

"As some of the players have highlighted (on Twitter), there are issues about work and not being able to get out of work.

"Teams have midweek challenge matches in the evening as well as training but this is an inter-county championship match that they've been training for and working towards all year.

"It's too big an occasion for them to be let down by loose arrangements. If squads were in agreement to play it then that's fine but as far as we're aware they weren't."

The Carlow v Laois encounter is due to take place in Dr Cullen Park on Friday, June 28 with a 7.45pm throw-in.
