Two of the four Galway students who were killed in a horrific car crash near the Galway-Mayo border earlier this week became best friends when they played football together for their local club.
Marie Ni Chonghaile and Teresa Molloy, who were both 19, met when they played ladies football for the Naomh Anna club in Lettermore. Former club secretary Micheal Bharry O Flatharta said: "They were lovely girls. They would have grown up together and played football together. They were the best of mates.
"People are just trying to come to terms with it. It's still very hard to cope."
Marie Connelly and Sorcha Rose McLaughlin also lost their lives following the head-on collision with a truck, which happened on the N17 between Milltown and Ballindine on Tuesday night. The driver of the car, Michelle O'Donnell, remains in a critical condition at Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar.
All five women were students of the Arts Faculty in NUI Galway.
All involved in Ladies Gaelic Football must express our sincere sympathy on the tragic deaths of these young ladies in this horrific accident in Galway.
