Replying To Thomas Clarke:  "It's fairly easy to understand. Cluxton is regarded by many as the greatest goalkeeper of all-time, a man who has revolutionised the game with his kickouts and is the only player to captain his county to 5 all-irelands (and counting). The next time they get round to picking the Greatest 15 of all-time, he'll probably replace Dan O'Keefe on it. It's hardly that difficult to imagine that some people would prefer him over Charlie Nelligan.

Nelligan was a decent keeper, though even in his own era he was behind Billy Morgan and Martin Furlong."
Yep. It depends which era you put them into. More emphasis on short kickouts these days, but back when defences went man to man there were more goal chances so keepers had to be better shot stoppers. They also got little or no protection under the high ball.

It's a close call. Nelligan for me but I can see why younger posters in particular are picking Cluxton.

I'd have Furlong ahead of both btw

Goalkeepers of the past were decent shotstoppers but other than that it was bang it out and your midfield men had to do the rest. It's not the same game any more and completely moved onto a different level nowadays.

Did you only realize that now?

Cluxton kicks 90% of his kickouts about 10/15 yards to an unmarked defender, that's hardly amazing is it ?

Based on the lineup above - it would seem Kerry 1976 would beat Dubs 2019 - but isn't the current Dubs team the best conditioned ever - near unbeatable ?

Not sure about 76 but the 78 Kerry team was incredible. Liston came into the full forward line and completed that front 6, giving them another dimension.

The beat Dublin 5-11 to 0-09 in the final.

5-11 to 0-09

The Greatest team to ever grace the game.

Dubs were going for 3 in a row that day.
The only 3 in a row that happened was the Bomber's hat trick :-)

Look at most county goalkeepers nowadays and they'd be far superior ball kickers. Charlie would stop a few oul shots alright but he'd be found out off the restarts. I think Martin Furlong was a better keeper anyway. I suppose it was a simpler game then if you like.
