Combined 4-In-A-Row Kerry Dublin Team

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Now that Dublin will surpass Kerrys greatest team, what would the combined XV look like? Taking the differences in era into account, hard to surpass:
S Cluxton

P McMahon
J OKeeffe
C OSullivan

P O Se
J McCarthy
J McCaffrey

B Fenton
J O Shea

D Connolly
K Kilkenny
P Spillane

M Sheehy
E Liston
D Rock for the frees

9 Dublin, 6 of the Kerry old guard.

John Egan ahead of Rock.
Nelligan in the goals if you are really taking eras into account.

Sufferin Jaysus, how in the name of god do these aul threads get up and running at all.
Let's be honest and frank about it sure none of the Kerry players of that era would have a hope against most teams in this era.
There's no comparison it's like comparing a Jack Russel with a Greyhound. The poor aul Jack Russell is hardy and wirey and he'll stick in the scrap but he'll have no chance of catching the hare.

I'd only have a handful of the Kerry lads in a combined team, sure most of them are in their late 50's/60's now

You really don't get the concept of "taking the difference in era into account", do you?

Ogie centre fwd.
The two finals we lost between 75 and 86 were the only two he didnt line out there.

Very good Roisineri :) It reminds me of when Pat Spillane was asked if the Kerry 4 in a row team could beat the current Dublin team. He replied, and I paraphrase; 'Kerry would probably win by a couple of points...PAUSE...and that's only because we are all in our 50's and 60's now...'

Nothing more than an interesting anomaly. Ogie was a fine footballer, but there were many better than him on that side. At best he was the 5th best forward, at worst sixth.

I'd suggest:

1. Stephen Cluxton
2. Jonny Cooper
3. John O'Keefe
4. Jimmy Deenihan
5. Paudi O'Se
6. James McCarthy
7. Jack McCaffrey
8. Jack O'Shea
9. Brian Fenton
10. Diarmuid Connolly
11. Ciaran Kilkenny
12. Pat Spillane
13. Mikey Sheehy
14. Eoin Liston
15. John Egan

For me, a lot of those calls were surprisingly easy, with the toughest call being No.15. I left out Bernard Brogan, mainly because he was much better from 2010-2014 as opposed to during his 4-in-a-row run. If judged on his entire career, I'd possibly have included him instead of Egan. Mannion and O'Callaghan would also have been close, though still a bit raw for this company.

All in all, 8 from Kerry and 7 from Dublin in my starting 15.

I can't understand lads having cluxton ahead of Charlie Nelligan, but when Dublin win the 5 this year he might be level with Charlie all right.

It's fairly easy to understand. Cluxton is regarded by many as the greatest goalkeeper of all-time, a man who has revolutionised the game with his kickouts and is the only player to captain his county to 5 all-irelands (and counting). The next time they get round to picking the Greatest 15 of all-time, he'll probably replace Dan O'Keefe on it. It's hardly that difficult to imagine that some people would prefer him over Charlie Nelligan.

Nelligan was a decent keeper, though even in his own era he was behind Billy Morgan and Martin Furlong.

Cluxton is rank under a high ball, nowhere near Nelligans class. Or Morgan, or Cullen for that matter.

Over 90% of cluxtons kickouts travel no further than the 21 meter line and he's not a great shot stopper, also he's only played about 10 championship games outside crokepark.

Nah , give me Charlie as my goalie any day of the week.
