Derry 1-29 V 2-19 Down

A last gasp Cormac O'Doherty goal from a '65' has helped secure a Christy Ring Cup semi-final berth for Derry in dramatic fashion.

O'Doherty's last gasp heroics boosted the Oak Leafers to a 1-29 to 2-19 victory over Ulster rivals Down at Maghera.

Crucially, the winning margin of seven points means the winners finish second in the Group B table on score difference - one point ahead of the Mourne County!

Despite conceding an early goal to Daithi Sands, the hosts led by 0-16 to 1-11 at the change of ends.

Sands raised his second green flag of the contest in the second-half but that was cancelled out by O'Doherty in the 69th minute.

Two further points proved to be sufficient to send Colm McGuirk's charges into the business end of the competition.

Meanwhile, London will have home comforts in the semi-final stage after they got the better of Armagh today.

Fergus McMahon's side recorded a resounding 4-27 to 0-11 victory over the Orchard County in the Athletic Grounds.

That means the Exiles finish top of the group with a score difference of +28 compared to Derry's +24 and Down's +23 while the Orchard County are relegated to the Nicky Rackard Cup for 2018.

That's unbelievable bad luck!

I don't believe it was worst year ever, more like most frustrating as having worked so hard to put themselves into great opportunities a young team let things slip at crucial times...........league final was the most disappointing as a Christy Ring campaign involving games away to both London and Derry was always going to be tough.....

Yesterday Derry brought the game to a tiny pitch in Glen and simply used the tight confines to try bully a young team......for long periods Down held out and with 7 mins left it was level but legs eventually tired and they got over run in those last minutes with Derry also getting a large sprinkling of luck.......

Key issue is the amount of frees with Down conceding 1-18 from placed balls, you won't do that in any game and win.......it was the same against Mayo , until Down teams cut out the fouling and tackle better than we will struggle against teams that carry the ball and play a hybrid of football with hurleys in their hands.....

There is a great bunch of young lads there who deserve better than to be subjected to abuse from keyboard warriors, lads went out yesterday gave it their all and unfortunately came up agonisingly short

I don't think anyone pointed fingers at players, far from it but 1-18 from placed balls can't be ignored and has been the Achilles heel of Down hurling teams over last few years until that is addressed then team will always struggle to reach its potential.....Its a serious panel only if lads want to make themselves available which wasn't the case for a lot of lads......

Tight pitch? Like Bally ran maybe, where we play all our games? Do not blame the players one bit, but where are the rest of the players? Where is Conor O Neill, Conor O Prey, Chrissy Egan, Mal Magee. If management can't keep players interested then county board need to look at this. Fair play management gave it a go but it hasn't worked out. That's a league and a Christy ring threw away

Talk all you want about what could have been or face the awkward truth - we're simply not good enough, three senior clubs against every other intermediate county in Ireland forget about it, just concentrate on keeping the game alive in this backwater and take any win as a bonus.

Luck and a goal from a 65!

I think there's progress this year so as much as I'm disappointed for the team they fared better in the CR than I thought they would but need a new No1 for a start. These errors are getting all too common.

Tackling is now a lottery in hurling but yes, conceding too many frees will always kill you and work needs done there, but I'd say we need an out and out enforcer at No3 which could be worked on but some of the names listed have proven time and time again not to have the mental fortitude and stamina for IC hurling so why bother trying to appease them.
Keep working with the young lads prepared to put in the hard yards.

We're going in the right direction IMO.

Don't know. I actually think the Down keeper is very good. He has saved the team on a number of occasions.

Did a Derry player not get the line with 10 to go? And they still get beat by 7! Now that is poor. You could pick a team from the rest of the ards players and beat the current county team. County hurling is in crisis and that is a problem resulting in poor people at the helm over the last number of years. Since Monan poor management teams have been appointed. Pure dung.
