I disagree Wayne. You are talking about a real old style defender here who is not afraid to get hurt in a battle & does what it takes to stop opponents. In my opinion he is like Garry Pallister and Kevin Moran rolled into one. In my opinion a centre half has to be prepared to do whatever it takes to keep the ball out of his net. He is ten times the player John Terry is and the only defender I feel is on a par with him is Jamie Carragher. I'm not talking about the nice side of the game here pretty passing etc I'm talking about old style Machiavellian defenders. Vidic & Carragher are both like that, but I think Vidic is the best centre back in Europe at the moment.

Whether he deserves his place in the team of the year is a good point. He has not played a lot of games recently and in my opinion if you're not playing you cannot be seleced in any team of the year.

Slayer, as a Liverpool supporter I think your been very kind to Jamie there!! Vidic is better than Jamie but id put Kompany as the best defender in England.

Rio and Vidic might not have met their own high standards in the recent past but they won the league and got to the champions league final last year, hence their nomination here. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on players ability but thats more than likely the reason they got nominated.

Surprised to read some of the appraisals of good and indifferent defenders. I have always thought Vidic a very ordinary footballer/defender. I dont agree that it is enough to be a good stopper. Put your head where others wouldnt put their feet for instance. They are admirable traits , but surely we should be looking for a bit more from defenders in the big clubs like Man Utd or Liverpool. Jamie Carragher has very little football in him , but like Vidic he will die for the cause. On the other hand and contrary to earlier remarks I always thought Wes Brown a classy player. He had good feet and a good temperamant. Never looked out of place with a ball at his feet , unlike the former two. Think Jonny Evans has a bit of quality too. Hes been a little unlucky though. The only reason Man Utd use players like Vidic is because the EPL demands that kind of element. The work ethic at the expense of quality. Surely both could be used together to greater effect.
