It’s three Round 3 matches in the Leinster and Munster hurling championships this Sunday and here we preview those down for decision.

 

Sunday, June 2nd

Leinster SHC round 3

Carlow v Dublin, Netwatch Cullen Park, 3pm

These two cross swords for the first time in the Leinster championship since 2000 and the losers of this one will be rooted to be bottom of the table heading into Round 4.

Sean Moran’s late, late goal snatched a draw for the Dubs last time out against Wexford and the bookies making them 1/10 favourites to claim the first win of their summer campaign this weekend.

Michael Duignan has said this week that he believes Carlow “have a really good chance” of upsetting the odds on home turf against Mattie Kenny’s men, while also predicting wins for Limerick and Tipperary on the same day.

Last year’s Joe McDonagh Cup winners shipped 3-22 to Kilkenny in their last outing and Colm Bonnar will not want to see the same gaps appearing in his defence this time round, or else the likes of Moran, Paul Ryan and Eamonn Dillon could have a field day at Netwatch Cullen Park.

Verdict: Dublin

 

Munster SHC round 3

Waterford v Limerick, Walsh Park, 2pm – RTE

Waterford head into this one still awaiting their first championship win since the 2017 All-Ireland semi-final and are 9/4 outsiders in Sunday’s early throw-in against Limerick.

It’s set to be the second meeting in a little over two months between these two, with the All-Ireland champions having conquered the Deise men in the National League final at the end of March.

Another loss to the Shannonsiders this weekend would mean the end of Waterford’s season, as they’d miss out on a top three finish in the Munster SHC for the second successive year.

Veteran Michael ‘Brick’ Walsh is expected to make his 75th championship appearance in a Waterford jersey at Walsh Park, while Tom Condon is back in the visitors plans after overcoming injury but David Dempsey and Seamus Flanagan still remain sidelined.

Verdict: Limerick

Clare v Tipperary, Cusack Park, 4pm – RTE

Tipperary have been the early pace-setters down south after two rounds and they’ll arguably be coming up against their toughest test of the summer to date when they travel to take on Clare.

The Banner men have been getting more and more bodies back since the league’s conclusion and attackers Ian Galvin and Cathal McInerney can go down as two more added to the pack ahead of this one.

Tipp haven’t had the same injury problems and head to Ennis off the back of eye-catching victories over Cork and Waterford where they registered 2-28 and 2-30 respectively. A goal for Seamus Callanan would mark his 30th in championship hurling and see him becoming the sole record breaker for championship goals in the county.

When these two met last summer, it was Clare that edged a two-point as they kept a 100 per cent record at home before entering the All-Ireland series and they’ll have their work cut out to pull off the same feat here.
