Junior All-Ireland for Wicklow

August 04, 2002
66-years on from their last junior football All-Ireland success, a hat trick of goals from Wayne O'Gorman helped the Garden County to a famous win over Kerry. Wicklow 4-9 Kerry 2-12 This was a thrilling game from start to finish and it was the greater experience of some of Wicklow's stars which gave them the edge over a young Kerry team. Mike Cooper scored a good goal for Kerryafter five minutes before Wicklow's Kevin O'Brien hit two frees and O'Gorman followed up with a penalty after Stephen Byrne was fouled. Donal McGillicuddy added to the Garden County's advantage but four points on the trot saw Kerry lead by 1-6 to 1-5 at the short whistle. O'Gorman scored his second goal shortly after the resumption but Kerry came back very strongly and looked like they would win the game in the third quarter. A goal and four points, the goal coming from Brian Scanlon, put four points between the sides but Wicklow were not slow in responding. O'Gorman set up McGillicudy for Wicklow's third goal and an O'Brien free levelled the game. Kerry again took the lead but O'Gorman scored his third goal to send the Wicklow followers wild.
