Former Monaghan star Rory Woods is keeping his fingers crossed that he will be fit to line out for New York in Sunday's Connacht SFC opener against Leitrim at Gaelic Park.

The vastly-experienced Donaghmoyne man emigrated to the Big Apple in 2010 and will start on the edge of the square for Connie Molloy's side, injury-permitting.

"I've been named at full forward, but I pulled a muscle in my back three weeks ago and it's bad today," he said when contacted by the Irish News yesterday.

"We played a game and I thought I'd pulled my hamstring, but then I got a sharp pain in my back and I couldn't get out of bed for about two days then. I'm just going to see how I am that morning. I trained last night but I'm very bad this morning so I'll just see how it is."

Woods admits the odds are heavily stacked against New York securing their first ever championship win in the Bronx this weekend.

"You always have a bit of a chance, but it's very hard out here," he continued.

"There's only so many things you can do before boys get tired and fed up. We're just training and training with no games, so it's very hard to know where you are."
