Cavan off to a Great start in New York
April 18, 2013
The Cavan team got off to a great start to the football campaign in New York with a well deserved victory over reigning champions Leitrim. On a glorious spring Sunday in Gaelic Park , Brendan O'Reilly and the Cavan team took the field.
In the first half playing against a strong breeze, it was an even match with Leitrim probably getting the better in the midfield area. However, Cavan got the first score of the game, a lovely point from play , which helped to settle the team down. The score at halftime was Cavan 0-5 and Leitrim 0-5 with the backline of Alan Carolan, Ronan McGinley , Barry McGinn and Michael O'Regan being oustanding for Cavan.
With halftime adjustments, Cavan started to dominate in midfield and drove the balls in low and hard to the forwards. With their speed and quickness, they were able to get through for some fine scores. The big break came shortly into the second half when Richie Morgan got a great goal. He ended up with 2-04 and Alan McCann 0-04. Cavan's passing and speedy movements gave Leitrim quite a bit of trouble. The final score was Cavan 2-11 to Leitrim 0-08.
Brendan has to be happy with the performance Cavan, gave especially against an outstanding team like Leitrim. The two midfielders, Steve Kenny and Owen Ward had a great game. In addition, Richie Morgan, Alan McCann, Joe McKeon and Sean Kenny were outstanding.
It was great to see Mickie (Fall) Reilly and his brother Phil Reilly on the sidelines coaching and helping the team.
