Boston Northeast 2013 AGM

Preparations for 2013 well Underway in Boston

John Farrell takes the chair for another year as the Boston Northeast Divisional Board held its AGM on Sunday, February 17. Despite the disagreeable weather - driving wind and snow, there were delegates representing 19 clubs present. Some had traveled from as far afield as Concord NH and Hartford CT.
There was much discussion about many aspects of the running the games in the division, including assisting clubs with travel to the North American Finals, refereeing, disciplinary procedures, and player insurance. There was also discussion about helping the underage clubs, plans for improvements to the facilities, a new Web site, and a PA system for the press box. In his address Farrell thanked all of the clubs and his fellow board officers, the clubs, the Irish Cultural Center, and the many people who have helped over the years with the smooth running of the games. It was also pointed out that the first collegiate gaelic football match took place at the Irish Cultural Center when Boston College fielded a side to play St. Joseph's from Philadelphia.

All but 3 of the 2012 officers returned to their positions. Paul Ryan, who had put in 3 years of service as Registrar, John McDevitt who had served as Treasurer, and 2012 Trustee Laura Burns, did not return for another year. Fr. Tom Burke's Kevin Mooney, who comes on to the board for the first time, stepped up to take the Registrar position. Francie Foster, who had served as assistant Treasurer in 2012, was promoted to Treasurer. Bernie Reilly filled the position of assistant Treasurer. Caroline Heraty and Gerry Prior accepted Trustee positions for 2013.

The weather was much improved for the continuation meeting on March 3 and it was well attended. It was a business like meeting as motions were submitted to improve competitions at all levels. A motion that was submitted by 3 clubs, Armagh-Notre Dame, Cork, and Mayo, to introduce an intermediate competition was passed. There was little opposition and the details will be worked out by the board and the clubs in question. There was also a motion that senior clubs second teams play in the junior A competiton which passed. Part of this discussion also involved the possibility of bringing in a junior C competiton for teams made up primarily of with American born players or senior club's third teams.
There was also much discussion regarding the board assisting clubs with the expense involved to travel to and participate in the North American Finals and a motion was passed in that regard. In 2013 the finals will be held in Cleveland.

Last year has given 2013 a lot to live up to. An exciting season is on the cards, however as clubs have been holding their on AGMs and putting committees in place. The first cup games begin in about 6 weeks, with the senior football championship to start in mid-May.
