Donegal NY juniors top the table

August 05, 2010
A solid. convincing win over a gallant FDNY squad has the Donegal NY junior team atop the table with the playoffs coming in September. The 2-19 to 105 victory followed the pattern of the season.

A lovely point from play in the first minute by Milford's Lorcan Friel opened a door that never closed. The FDNY lads didn't see their first ball clear the bar until the 13th minute, and a goal at the 26th narrowed the gap to 6 points. That was as close as they came and the first stanza closed at 1-2 to 13 points.

Donegal opened the second half with a vengeance as Ardara Molloy clan scion CJ honored his grandmother's memory with a cleanly-netted ball, lifting the tally to 1-15 to 1-2. Another Donegal goal at the 24th minute put paid to any FDNY hopes and the contest closed with a 17 point Donegal lead.

Donegal have one tie remaining, Thursday next against a 3-3 St. Barnabas panel and then it's sit back and watch the other nine teams battle for quarter final berths. Donegal are already qualified for the semi-final and assured of nothing less than second seed, depending on whether someone can defeat the Monaghan 15 that are the only team to have beaten the Tir Chonaill men.

The reinvigorated Donegal Senior panel has two weeks off heading into a 15th August tie against Cork and a 29th battle with Tyrone. A win in both will put them into the playoffs for the first time in several years. A split outcome will leave their future in the hands of others.
