Donegal Seniors top Kerry for play off hope

July 27, 2010
The Donegal NY Senior team kept a playoff hope alive Sunday with a convincing 1-10 to 0-6 win over Kerry, who right now have a tenuous hold on the last playoff spot but are only one point above the rejuvenated Tir Chonaill men. A torrential downpour drenched Gaelic Park ahead of the tie but subsided by the starting whistle to a level described by not a few players as "just like at home." The rain-slowed contest saw little scoring until the 19th minute when Kieran Tavey rocketed the ball past Kerry's goalkeeper on a penalty try and Donegal finished the first stanza 1-5 to 0-3. A splendid save from Donegal keeper Tony McMahon was the highlight of an equally low-scoring second half and put paid any Kerry catch-up hopes. Wins in Donegal's last two games should put them in the playoffs, a split leaves them at the mercy of other contenders' results.
