Cavan on winning trail in New York
July 20, 2010
Cavan 3-15
Kerry 1-05
In the New York Championship, Cavan Senior footballers are on the playoff trail as they followed a win over Donegal with a clinical victory over old rivals Kerry. A second half bombardment when Cavan outscored their opponents 2-10 to 0-02 made Cavan the easy winners with Cuchullians' Eugene Keating getting 1-05 and Eoghan Carew from Kildare 1-06 it was a double edged sword for the Breffni men.
The game exploded with goals at each end in the first eight minutes. Cavan had theirs when a free from Eoghan Carew on the forty yard line went all the way to the net while Kerry's was more of the orthodox type. Shane Carty and Dermie Foley set Paul O'Connor free and he dispatched to the net easily. It was all Cavan however for the rest of the half as they added five points to Kerry's three but should have had more such was their dominance.
They added 1-05 to their total in the first 15 minutes of the second half before Kerry had their first point from Paul O'Connor. Eugene Keating grabbed the goal after good build up from Eoghan Carew and Kevin Smith. They had a further 1-05 to 0-01 in the final fifteen with Garth Kelly coming off the bench and slotting home the goal.
Cavan were on top across the field. Alan Hearty took care of what came his way, Mullahoran's Nobby Smith was very effective as a roving corner back, Ciaran Shields and Red Hills Rory Dunne are strong on the ball with Dunne the Cavan under 21 and senior panelist extremely confident.
Kevin Smith the Longford man of the match versus Kerry last season, had his best game so far this summer, he purred like a finely oiled machine Carew and Keating were the stars up front but they got very good help from Frankie Barry and Enda Lenard. Paul Lamb showed himself to be a lively defender after he was introduced. Kerry will look at the performances of Paul O'Connor, Shane Enright and Anthony Glacken as their best, they were found wanting at far too many locations however.
Cavan are in the hands of Manager Mike Reilly from Carrickallen Co Leitrim this season with Jim Gilsenan Munterconnaught trainer of the side. Michael Smith Mullahoran is a selector as well as a brilliant corner back for the Cavan juniors in New York. Next up for the team is an important game against fellow contenders Cork on July 25th at Gaelic Park New York.
